Five months old now. Starting to get some tail feathers. The brown looking bits are actually bad/see-through edges on his feathers. None of the others have this. Hoping it goes away with his first real molt (assuming he stays sweet and I keep him that long).

Looks like he is going to be a big boy!

If the "brown" (more likely red/gold) doesn't go away, it's considered leakage, which is a color fault. This is seen a lot in Splash males, especially in the hackles and wing bows. If the color persists he shouldn't be used for breeding of any kind, rather he should be culled.

There's definitely no actual brown color there. I've looked really closely. The ends of the feathers are ratty and see-through, basically clear. I'm not really looking to breed anyway, but I'm enjoying watching them all grow and develop. If he has a good temperament, that's all I care about. Maybe next round I'll be ready to take a more serious stab at high end chickens and breeding.

And yes @rockinpaints, he's quite large. I took the standard 5G bucket shot a few weeks back.

Any cases of avian influenza showing up in the south? Particularly in southCarolina?
I've only heard of cases in Minnesota & Missouri (east of the Mississippi). It's likely going to or already has spread (& just not discovered yet) to other states, so strict bio security measures should be taken now.

The most recent information I have on states with an outbreak is listed here. http://thefancychick.com/blog/avian-influenza-2015-outbreak/
I'll update the page as I get confirmed information. The information on that page is taken directly form CDC, APHIS and USDA.

Good biosecurity is always always recommended but especially now. Info on practicing good biosecurity http://thefancychick.com/blog/poultry-bio-security/
Hope this information is helpful. No reason to panic just be vigilant.
