Joey- I can't really tell from the picture....can't see his comb or chest. If you can get down on his level and take a nice side shot and front shot, it would be helpful. Julie might be able to tell more from your picture. Also, how old is he?

4HPoultryMom - I love the lacing on the blue in the first picture, very nice. Where are your birds from?

Kassandra - That would be really great if you could pump some info out of the your friend !!!

Jeremy - I still have Nigel and Sirius in a pen together and they are coming up on 6 months old. No fighting at all so far. They get along really well, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I think that NIgel is the alpha roo, but Sirius crows a lot more than Nigel. Nigel does crow, but just not as much as Sirius.

Julie - NO...you didn't tell me you have some fertile eggs from Hoss !! Great news !! I have about 15 eggs that I've been tossing in the bator on a daily basis. The first 3 aren't doing a thing and I don't have much hope for the others to be fertile. These came out of Winston's pen and I've always had to trim him in order to get fertile eggs and I"m not trimming until the weather warms up. I don't want the poor little boy to run around with a frozen bum !!

I got all my chicks from Mary/Backyard Farm who got her BBS stock from Julie/ BamaChicken and her Lav stock from Jodi/Hinkjc. The blue is my favorite too! Next I need to get some from you!!!

Tamara - If I am not mistaken, Mary also got some of my birds. I'll have to dig out my chicken book and check my records on that, but I'm pretty sure. The lacing on that blue girl is really really pretty. I am hoping to have some chicks available this Spring.

Yes, I plan on using the black cockerel and two pullets to improve the type on the lavender birds. But that black roo and the blue pullet are my faves! From what I understand, those are from BamaChickens lines. Only the lav ones I have are from Jody's lines. But hopefully that black roo will help things move along nicely!

Hmmmm, I wonder if that was last year? I got these birds as chicks from her in late August 2010. Maybe your's weren't laying yet for her? Yes, my pic's don't do that blue pullet justice. She is really really gorgeous if I do say so myself! I'm scared to let them free range at the moment because we have a ton of coyotes. But that would allow for better photo's....sigh. We'll have to add a fenced area around their coop this summer. I'm already realizing the coop I have for them is on the small side and they are only just over 5 months old! I will probably need to wait on chicks eggs from you until I can build a bigger coop! HA! And I do want to hatch out my F1's from crossing the blacks/lavenders first thing. Maybe by F2's I'll get some of your stock!

Now that is really funny, Mary from Battleground? the two blue pullets I have came from her also and they were out of some stock she had gotten from Julie. small world !!!! Mine are just 8 or 9 months, the blue one in my avatar just laid her first egg this morning

I have another friend who lives just up the road that has some Orps from a club member too, some of them come from Julies stock also! I live up by florence acres/ old pipeline. I have coyotes too, lots of em, I let mine free range though as they dont get very far from the house and barn and outbuildings, they like to hang out right in front of the gates keeping the dogs in lol. smart girls! although it torments the dogs lol

Ewesheep combs have been addressed during 4th and 5th generations, breedings and selections and plus adding in some english blood, much smaller combs now.

cant wait to see the 6th generation which we will be starting to incubate very soon.

got our first pullet eggs this week, anyways those larger combs in our colder climates here in the north don't fair well.

It is a VERY small chicken world !! I have shipped chicks to several folks in Washington State, and I am pretty sure that Mary was one of those, though not 100% sure about that. I'll have to look it up and see. I would say if I did ship her chicks or eggs (I might have still been selling hatching eggs back then) that they probably would not have been laying back in August 2010.

We let ours out every day to free range, but only if we sit out with them. That is one of our favorite things to do in life - sit outside in the lawn chairs and watch the chickens run around the yard. If we are really in the mood to be entertained, we take down a bowl of cooked spaghetti noodles - quite the comedy show then !! LOL.

RR, I agree with you and Joy, it is a small world after all. I have to be here to let mine out to free range due to Hawks and the occasional stray dog that can show up when you not expecting it. Mine sure woiuld have loved to have gotten out in the last few days but I just haven't been here long enough.
