When it come to the big old roosters..well they just need some long warm sunny days and some green grass under their feet...fertility will come along with spring.

I have 7 incubators stuffed with fertile eggs. A trick I do when a cock or cockerel is not doing his job, is to move a decent size cage inside the pen with the girls. Put one cockerel/cock inside the cage and have anther cock/cockerel in the pen and flip flop them every third day. Taking the one out of the cage and putting the other into the cage. This worked well with my picky breeders. Now every pen outta 20 pens is giving me fertile eggs. Sometimes it is the girls who may make it difficult to be breed. Their young and not fully understanding their purpose in life. I do not trim or pluck. I have three of Julie's pullets and all three are laying fertile eggs. But, moving in and out different cock/cockerels will have these boys on their toes and doing their job. Just another idea that has worked well for me. And I candle after 4 days and have eggs lining the walls of my foamy incubators. ALL are fertile or they'd be dog food. Good luck!

Kathy, if it makes you feel any better... I'm still not even getting any eggs from my girls!

Well, none that I can positively confirm that are theirs. I have 2 that I suspect might be pullet eggs, one is approaching day 10, so we'll see...

I've penned Neville and his girls together now permanently, I didn't wait as long as recommended to keep them apart, but he would do nothing but droop in his quarantine cage. Whenever I allowed him any time around the girls it's like he turned into a completely different bird, strutting his stuff and grabbing ahold of whatever pullet came closest to him. I think he's much happier now that he's in the coop with the rest of the flock.

ALL my other pens are fertile and I have tons of eggs. Just gonna have to wait on these I guess.

hey Julie, I have to tell you again how nice this rooster is. he works very hard for his ladies and they are devoted. He is also SMART! it took him one whole day to figure out that when I come out of the house and make my stupid chicken noise at them it means I have food. He will call his girls and run to see me. I can call them from across the pasture and they come running. My hubby laughs and says he has seen it all now, chickens that come when you call them. Anyway I just thought I would give you an update, He is really nice to have around and I appreciate a good rooster that is not a knucklehead. smart boy... he knows who has the goodies around here!
