the silkie slickers

Pics
I usually use Blue Frog bedding and that is great it’s just I’m fussy and like to try new stuff to see if it fairs any better!

I used to use Lay Soft (I think?) and it was alright except feathered feet birds don’t mix well with it. If it was even slightly damp the wood chippings would stick solid onto their feathers and I’d have to actually pluck the feathers out as soaking them never even got it out ☹️

This new one I’m trying is Rape Seed bedding and it’s quite dry in itself so I’ll see how it goes!

I’m currently having a nightmare with any cage that the male is in dry, I don’t know what’s wrong with him but all I can put it down to is that his metabolism is very high and he drinks a lot of water compared to all my other hens 🤔

Yeah, hopefully it works out! I hate pulling out feathers from the chickens, it happens sometimes when you get ones who have really muddy feet and they have to be cleaned and plucked because it hurts them and messes up their beautiful plumage.

I have just entered into 11 classes for the Staffordshire County Show (6 chickens going). Classes I have entered are:
• Male LF Maran (X1)
• Female LF Maran (X2)
• Male Silkie (X1)
• Female Silkie (X2)
• 3 Large Brown Eggs
• 1 Large Brown Egg
• 3 Large AOC Eggs
• 1 Large AOC Egg
• 3 Distinct Coloured Eggs
• 3 White Bantam Eggs
• 1 White Bantam Egg
Going to have fun having to collect and wash that lot! 😂🤣

So a few pics of mine, Molly the paint I lost a few months ago. The second pic is my old lady Eloise at 13 this year, and the last pic is prissy, 6 year old getting through a molt, so a little rough looking

might get a fecal to check for yeast? I had that problem and thats what it was

He hasn’t really got any typical signs of a yeast infection apart from his poops are pretty much 80% water but his vent area and everything is normal and healthy :idunno

He just drinks all the time. I’ve bought a supplement that’s meant for high metabolism birds that’s to help with hardening their poop so hopefully it helps him.

As you can he, he’s at his favourite bowl...

The three silkies that I am taking.
They are all about 9 months old so will be 11 months old at the show. Cotton is the middle silkie (in the top photo) and has won a few prizes at major chicken shows and Archie is expected to do well too now that he has matured!

Shelley, my two year old wheaton maran cockerel.
Has won many prizes for me over the years.

Spice, my two year old wheaton maran hen. She is also the half sister of Shelley (same dad, different mum).

Speedy, my one year old wheaton maran hen. She is the daughter of Shelley and Spice. She has actually already won her first prize (1st) when she was only 3 months old!

So yeah, these are my six candidates for shows. I will send pictures of me trying to wash the silkies and what the results are! Can't wait!

I was wondering what other people used to whiten their silkies, I usually use fairy liquid and vanish (obviously no where near the eyes or mouth!).
