The Sizzle Thread!

Wet and cold can be an issue, and extended SEVERE cold could be an issue (as in no coop to go into at night to pile with flockmates and share body warmth), or cold to immature birds who are not fully feathered.  But in general cold is not an issue.
Of course to an extent. Cold nights are fine. If anything the cold days bother them more than the nights. Also, wet conditions are a bad idea for silkies when the temperatures are bellow freezing. Last winter (early December) we had a lot of rain one day - and of course they stood outside and were soaking wet - that night the temperatures plummeted to -10 and they needed to be dried off properly before bed. I'd much rather have cold and dry than any type of wet conditions. I'd say they did much better than my polish. I love their body piles :love

All my girls sleep in one pile with babies that are 7 weeks old (mother decided to go broody again) it's so cute seeing those little chicks snuggled up with the teenagers.

AF chick, how did you get that black and white one? Like what breeding? We had a chick we bought at a day old almost that same color that was killed and I'd love to be able to breed another

My niece cried when she found out a coon got him. Miss him dearly

Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond- The original Cochin used was frizzled partridge crossed a paint Silkie and then their offspring, back to several other paints for a couple of generations (HEAVY culling &. I mean completely RUTHLESS). Then their offspring to my greys til I ended up with her- I've since taken her parents and have replicated the color / pattern a few more times HOWEVER only in frizzled. I REALLY need a smooth to hatch out in this color / pattern whenever my hens stop thinking it's OK to be as broody as they are

At the moment, my pens and coops look like "mini-correctional facilities" with all the wire cages everywhere LOL

I'll try to post some better pics of her and also some of the new chicks, who are growing out like her, this weekend. She and the others hatched out as chipmunks with no gold whatsoever.

I have 4 boy sizzles. One smooth, two silkie feathered, and one sizzle feathered. I want to breed them to my silkies and maybe cochins? My sizzle feathered is black and the other three are khaki colored. My silkies are paint, white, and black. My cochins are buff and black. What should I breed to and which colors???

OK I actually had one of my young pullet as a chick still on the desktop- She's on the right ... her brother (frizzled with the same color / pattern) is on the left. He was sent to a friend of mine who wanted to help with this project.

Below is another one from the same breeding pair as my older pullet and is almost identical to the others at this age.

I have one more chick with this color/pattern from a recent hatch, but I don't have a photo of "her" on this PC-

Ok if anyone is good at genetics could you answer this question? I have a sizzle rooster (I have a picture on here somewhere, but if you need me to post on again just ask) and my friend is breeding her frizzle rooster to a silkie hen, if they got a sizzle hen and I bred her to Spike (my sizzle roo) Do you know what percent would be sizzles? Thanks!

chances are pretty good that your paint (if it's from me) carries khaki. if you are wanting to breed paint, then breed paint to either black or white. ideally breed your smooth to a frizzle feathered and you should get 50/50 smooth and frizzle.

Thanks. I just don't want to end up with some odd colored chicken. Although maybe that wouldn't be bad.

I can tell you that they are fiesty little devils. i think they need girlfriends fast!

Awww they look so much like my little Jose. I probably won't be able to get that color again then. He came from a lady with dozens of different breeds that she hatches, and she said he was a pure silkie. My niece thought he was sick when his feathers first started coming in xD

But as a chick, Jose didn't look like that.

He was a little chipmunk that looked silver.

I really do miss him dearly. If you ever decide to sell hatching eggs from that pair, make sure to PM me.
