2 of my older gals kinda settled on what their egg is going to look like, one lays a smooth, one lays a speckled. With that said though, both have switched it up and given me eggs opposite what they normally are. If you think about it...Wellies spray on their color just like the Marans do, so, the longer its in the chute.... the more color deposited, but there are many other things that can set them off. For instance, when one of my gals that normally lays a heavily speckled egg is in the nest box, inevitably another hen always has to get in the same blasted box with her because the other empty boxes just aren't good enough, they hen that is being pushed out will be so hissed off that she usually runs outside and drops her egg on the ground and sure enough it comes out with no speckles.

I don't think one is more common than the other (smooth vs speckled), either they do or they don't. Both are acceptable as long as they are that pretty Terra Cotta color.

How do you know who lays what? I am looking for pointers because short of putting them alone in a crate for a day or two I just can not see my way clear to be able to know for sure.

Lucky enough to catch them in the act. I also have various ages of birds so I know who should be coming on line and start laying.
A lawn chair, cool drink and wait.

I love this egg info. I had a 6 pack of eggs open on my desk yesterday at work just to look at. And other people have pictures of their kids......silly people. The first egg out of each of our Welsummers was lighter brown but with huge very dark speckles. Subsequent ones have had a darker base color but smaller speckles or none at all. I like the light egg with the huge brown speckles!

Although the one today was nice, terra cotta but with small well defined speckles all over it. Does the SOP say what the egg should look like? I would be very interested to know that!

This is taken from the UK Welsummer website:

Colour: A rich, deep red-brown, as dark as possible. Some products are speckled and occasionally blotched. Glossy eggs are produced but the matt egg is the preferred.

Finally some the new gals started laying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have officially rebuilt my flock and all is well. Now it's time to start hatching again very soon!!!

My new wellie laid her first egg with us 2 days ago and we've only owned her 3 days she must love us...and boy does she LOVE to sing the egg song even for my SLW makes her feel extra special

My broody Ameraucana is serious about this hatching stuff. She's turned into a velociraptor. Guess I should have ordered those eggs from Tailfeather's friend.

Of course if I did, she would have left the nest.
