The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yes, they usually hold their tails higher. And their leg color is better than the pictures show.

Moose is still huge, but he has had some comb issues this year. He hooked his comb on the fencing and tore it at the skull. I found him hanging by his comb. That is why the back flops over now.

Hi, I have a question... I bought some chickens and ended up with a couple surprises...the hatchery said one was a Welsummer. I agree the coloring looks a lot alike but can a Welsummer chick be completely black like mine was? I like the chicken a lot but just wantto know the breed! I am using mobile for this site and can't post pics but would gladly give my instagram account if anyone would care to take a look..
Thanks for any help or info!

Sounds like maybe a copper black marans? Those chicks are totally black and grow up to look similar to welsummers, but even then they're black not the red brown of a welsummer hen.

We have seven almost 12 week old pullets. Two of them are Welsummers. Just recently (last week) one of the Welsummers started picking on the other. The bully is not at the top of the pecking order (of all the girls) from what I can tell, two of the Ameraucanas sort of share that spot :) She doesn't pick on anyone else and nobody else picks on the one she is picking on. She grabs the feathers at the top of her head and pulls them out. I don't worry about it too much while they free range, but she is secluding her from the others and not letting her sleep in the coop half the time.

Any ideas on what to do or why she is doing this?

Also, my Welsummers are the opnly ones that do this so I thought I'd see if anyone else's do this. They puff up all the feathers on their head (like a dog's hair sticking up on the back of it's neck) when they are trying to look all big.
I have one Welsummer who is a very big chicken. She lives with a Barnevelder and RIR. Also have an Australian bred Araucana ( different to the American breed ) ... and it was the Welsummer who darnn near killed the bantam Araucana. Little Mindy ( Araucana ) is now by herself enjoying the company of two lace neck doves and a blackbird every day with whom she shares her treats. The Welsummer has been put in her place by the RIR - and the Barnevelder kind of just keeps out of the action. So yes - Welsummers can be nasty natured, but my Wellie is now perfectly behaved. I think the RIR put her in her place. They are all 1 year old in September.

However, if the behaviour persists, I agree with Brookliner - to isolate the bully for a few days ( or weeks ) and teach her that lonliness is not better than being with the flock. I do think they are intelligent and that they DO learn - given time. Good luck ............ AB. .

Thank you! While there is still some tension between the two we haven't had any additional issues in the coop at night so I'm hoping they got it all figured out amongst themselves!
