The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hi all, I am new to this thread. I just ordered 5 wellsummer pullets and 1 rooster. I should be getting them in a couple weeks. I have a question or two.
I was willing to pay the price for this breed so that I would be able to tell pullets from roosters. On the chicks is it true that you can only tell what they are the first day after they hatch? I will have to get something to put on the roosters ankles. Are the wellies very friendly? I have BAs, BL, EEs, and Turkey. So I am hoping they will all get along.

Sexing by markings is not 100%. The markings stay until they feather in. By 4 weeks old, you can tell the sex based on chest coloring. Males will have black/red chest coloring and females will have salmon chest coloring.

Hello, I was lurking here and have been reading up on Welsummers for awhile, they seem to have a lot of great qualities.

I believe many of you who post here also have some experience with Marans (any variety). In general, how would you compare the two breeds just for egg productivity, plus overall vigor and longevity? I seem to read many conflicting reports on this, but I realize it can vary greatly by line. I'm interested in both breeds and trying to decide if I need more of a dual-purpose breed like the Marans or possibly a better egg-layer like the Welsummers. The egg color on either is pleasing enough to me so that is not an issue.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.
