This is why we don't trade outside of our personally known group!!!

Chickanmanfromarkansas you said it! I just heard that hidden in the new healthcare bill is a requirement that any small business buying or selling anything worth more than $600 would have to report it to the IRS on Form 1099! That means the seller's info would be recorded, too!

They do not want the average individual to have or sell anything without their knowing about it

You weren't supposed to notice

I agree. That's why I don't buy anything at church bake sales & I don't go to pot luck suppers. Personally I like the fact that governments have established standards for food preperation & storage. I also like the notion that the people producing food for sale are inspected.

I don't know why people think store bought stuff is better. I've bought milk that was bad because it wasn't stored properly, bread with mold on it and I've seen pizza dough that was rising covered with flys at a "national" pizza place. I'd rather buy the old church ladys cupcakes. I think they would be safer.

If I want to buy local food from someone who makes it themselves and doesn't want to/can't pay the "inspection" fee for just a small household operation (which is really just another tax), then I should be able to.

In Vermont you are allowed to sell your home raised chickens (not sure about canned or baked goods) locally to neighbors, at farmers markets, even to restruants....as long as you process less than 1000 birds annually. you have to mark them "uninspected" and show weight/price per lb. People up here have been getting up to $4.oo PER POUND on 6-7 POUND CHICKENS!!!!! thinking of venturing down that road next year but cannot bring myself to charge $4.00/lb!!!

do they have to be processed at a USDA plant or can you process them yourself and still sell them "privately?" (like to friends/family)

you can process yourself and sell privately...Vermont passed a "chicken bill" which allows Vermonters to sell their birds and eggs as long as they are stated correctly and are not sold to be shipped out of state
