Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Evelle, thanks!! My first hatch will go down as one of those once in a lifetime experiences that I am so grateful to have had. I have another 12 ancona eggs and 5-7 african goose eggs currently on day 9. Hasn't this been a weird winter?? I can't remember the last time I saw ground/grass on Feb. 1st. Here's hoping for an early spring! We deserve it after last winter! :D

Evelle, I live in the same climate as you. My geese do well free ranging 24/7. I feed them a cup each of whole kernel corn twice per day plus all the horse quality grass hay they want.

how many do you have???
they are okay with just corn and hay??? i pay for my girlfriends food (she has surgery on her knees and cant really afford to feed so i help where i can) and i give them game bird feed.. (not cheap.)
i dont know if my girlfriend would want to change thier diets but if yours do good maybe i can talk her into it.
my girl friends dont want to leave the coop... she was kinda (understatement she made her husband walk down to the coop in the middle of night to check to see if they were okay..) worried when i suggested to put water outside to help with the mess in her coop because they NEVER LEAVE.. LOL
She spoils them sooo much.. she has 4 heat lamps in the coop to make sure they dont get cold... i think shes nuts!!

you cant really say you live in the same climate as me the town i drive to 10 mins away is differant then where i am.. though i see what you mean because you live in utah and you have snow also.. not last year but the two years before we had snow until june.
it snowed on my birthday (june 14th) i live near a ski resort.. so its differant then where i go shopping or get my food shopping done ;) i love it though..

Evelle, I have 2 geese. I talked to Holderreads about proper winter diet for them... and they said pretty much anything you feed a horse you can feed a goose. I feed them oats instead of corn when it is not so cold, but otherwise that is it. They are not fat but they are healthy. :)

FYI, I live in Wanship (just outside of Park City) at 6,000 elevation. The ski areas are 10 miles away and I get an average of 300+ inches of snow at my property annually.

ohhhhh
i cant wait to get some ancona eggs to hatch...
urg!!! I WANT TO HATCH!!!

i reallly need some advice about vader..
shes a micro and is slow in her development like her brothers and sisters.
i really want to leave my ducks outside but she doesnt have all her feathers yet.. do you think she would be okay being out in the coop with the big ducks??? they do okay with each other.. sometime push the little ones around... should a wait a little longer or just do it i dont want smelly ducks in the house anymore.. LOL
its been all winter. sun is shining more than not.
WHAT WOULD YOU ALL DO HERE???

oh they are just beautiful arent they!! pilgrams correct??
THATS GREAT!!!!! i am going to have a little talk with my girlfriend.. LMAO!!!
OH yup then you do feel my pain LOL!!!
dont you just love the snow though.. when its blue skys and a blanket of white..
i think its just beautiful.
i just hate the cold. when you breath in and your boogers turn to crystals LOL

One of my little goslings died. It hadn't pipped yet, and I couldn't see it moving anymore so I opened it.

The other is still moving, but it's the smaller one with a worse air cell so who knows.
My calls are still looking great though, and I just placed my order for a pair of roman tufted from ideal.

I'm SOOOO pulling for your gosling! Hope Celtic can offer some help... she's great!

Evelle, They are african toulouse crosses that came with the property I got last summer. I do feel your pain. I especially hate my earrings freezing in my ears. Hubby teases me about wearing ear muffs, but his ears aren't pierced 10 times with freezing metal! I also love the beauty of the snow and the mountains, but I basically put up with the winters to enjoy the wonderful weather during the rest of the year.

Why can't you hatch anconas? There are two great listings now on this site for eggs, plus more on ebay.

Oh... and I don't know what to say about your duckies going outside. Pretty sure ours will stay inside for a full 6 weeks (longer if hubby gets his way).
