Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

You live in a really cool area and only 3-4 hours away from me, but remote! It's been super mild overall this year, considering we were still buried under snow this time last year. But, we are still getting below freezing more nights than not. There is a local rule to never plan a garden here before memorial day weekend, but the fields are already being watered and looks like we will get an early cutting, which is good.

I've been very lucky so far with all my hatching eggs shipments. I have bought eggs from the seller of my gosling a few times, shipped priority mail, and they were always delivered to my house within 48 hours of her dropping them off. This is my 1st with live birds and she sent them express. Seems like bs if it takes 48 hours, instead of overnight. The hang up is in Cali, though, as they did not depart that sorting facility for airport to wait for next fedex flight until 9pm last night.

>< That is bs, most definately. Why would you pay more for something to be shipped if it takes the same time as something that doesn't cost as much. They've been talking about making all these changes to the PO to "save money" or whatever, but it actually is going to make people quit using the PO altogether. Well definately

for your little ones. I hope they all make it intact. Sounds like, they are, at least, in good hands now!

And that is an excellent rule. I might have to start going by that. I have a rule that I heard a few years back, the corn has to be "Knee high by 4th of July". I've never had it knee high though! Lol. It has been quite mild this year, hasn't it? It's been nice. Utah is extremely beautiful, it seems like the entire state is beautiful, not just bits and pieces of it. I'm glad that you all are going to get an early cut this year! Hopefully this summer will be extra good on all of our crops. The cold sure isn't!! Half of my garden is in my house right now!

Marty, nice to see you on here again. Hope you are taking time to just sit and enjoy the goslings. They are built in stress reducers.
Dutch did you get any of that rough weather?
Kevin, when will you have zebra hatching eggs?
lol.png

Saw water buffalo and zedonks listed on CL here recently. I think I can put the youngest goslings back out today. Poor things got stuck inside yesterday with the rains threatening.
Some severe storms came through, but they went above and below me. Just enough rain to wet the cars...grrrr. We are in dire need of rain! There were some places hit hard last night, but I haven't caught the news today to know what sorts of damage occured.

It doesnt' matter what part of the country I'm receiving from....they always take 48 hrs to get to me.

Sorry to hear about little ones not makin it

. And ya'll need to move to Wyoming because our Post Offices takes the greatest care of our little ones. When we get them, you get a call, even if its 3:00 am. lol.

On a lighter note, someone had an extremely busy night, and it definately was not me.

YAY!!! CONGRATS!!!! Glad he made it alright!!!!

Wow.... been on the phone with my USPS airport receiving office. LOVE THEM!! They gave me a crash course on all flight times that would possibly have birds. They made sure they did not arrive already. The morning lady who personally picks up the birds from airport, is going over to airport to check latest flight just in case and took my cell #... and the main afternoon/night guy also took my cell # to call me if they arrive on any later flights tonight!

HEY COCOA !!! I was afraid maybe you got eaten by an EMU !!!
ep.gif

I'm good, Utah!!! How are you? Winter is setting in here.... hope you are enjoying the start of summer!!!
I have PUPPIES ! That is my news & I am getting some CRAZY rare Pheasant eggs! Mad at PO, (not my delivery lady ~ she rocks), My 10 year old boy Ramsey is rocking Baseball this year! I have way to many geese
lau.gif
. WE FINALLY have sunshine....well kinda.

Hey quackers, so sorry about your silkie duckling! Um,.. What's a silver applewood?
Dutch, sent out this morning. She didn't want to risk sending them last week with the memorial holiday weekend. I am really hoping that they get here tomorrow, and it would be less than 24 hours in transit.
Mmmmmm a silver applewood is extra tasty on the BBQ !
Hello friends and hatch buddies.

Busy right down to my toenails in all this executer crap. this stuff is complicated and hard, even though I'm an only child and sole heir.

I won't say more, but your reading the words of a frustraited lady whols nice is about to cruise north for the summer. Just had to vent a wee bit.

My poor turkey poult, hatched a few days ago and attempted to drown itself but I rescued, had succumbed to a secondary lung infectioin, no doubt from inhaling what couldn't have been perfectly clean water. You know how birds are..... Poor little guy was dead this morning. That leaves me 4 bourbon reds. Lets hope for two pairs!!!

I have a lone sebbie eggs turning in its shell tonight, with a nice tip starting and a beak working at the bottem edges.

If it hatches, that'll give me an even dozen geese.

DH has made me to 6 x 2 foot outdoor brooders so my goslings can be eating fresh grass w/o danger. The toulouse are doing great, and the the sebbies are just georgous. One sebbie is actually getting in a mix of gray and some buff feathers with the white. Its a calico!!!!
YEAH Marty on the Pen & the 2loose, sebbies, and your calico!
LOL Quackers, I thought that was what you meant. I love my apples almost more than my cayugas, but Twist (my cayuga duck) and Molasses (my cayuga drake) are extra special.
TEAM CAYUGA !!!

No doubt! Keep up the good work

Well...they can potty train little pigs, why not a turkey??

I was watching the vent sexing on Metzer's and he showed ducklings that were down sexed. Don't recall what they were, though. Watch the video and see if that's what you're looking for.
Sorry about your silkie...sounds about as difficult to hatch as Calls.

Ok...I was confused about the tracking thing...was a duh moment, lol. Glad they are almost there!

You too, Marty

Hope they arrive with bells n whistles n bows !!
Rachel, YAY!!!!!! Congrats!!!!!!!

Where in Wyo are you? I'm in Park City, Utah... 60 miles from Evanston. My post office is in Coalville... so I know exactly what you mean. The ladies there are the best! They are trying to pull strings to allow me to get my babies from SLC sort facility if they show up there on tracking this afternoon, so I do not have to wait until 7am tomorrow.

Big enough BBQ grill anything is possible. Some hickory wood and a nice rub :D

Marty, you must post pictures, the grey will dilute in the sun and become some kind of funky in coloring. They molt off though. The splash goslings will also fade over time too, but molting will change their look. Having the parent stock of your goslings I can tell you it isn't a calico (or two toned) but does have good bloodlines behind.

Hubbies condition has worsened, so I may be hit and miss on here depending on what they finally decide to do for him. Let's must say the military is NOT taking care of him very well so far.

Celtic, very sorry to hear about your hubby!!

Jaz, by the way, hubby is determined to kill a drake for eating. I have no idea why. In the 13 years I've been with him, I've never seen him eat/order duck. But I figured I'd ask... what is the best way to kill a drake?

1st THE QUICKER the better. So have everything ready, before you catch the drake. You don't want to stress out the duck any longer than need be.
A block of wood & a sharp hand ax. Be sure you hold the wings, (feet claws are sharp) I zip tie the legs together.
Have a garbage can underneath or nearby, because you will need to hold the body in it to "bleed" out, until they stop moving. Now are you going to pluck or skin?
Have a good pair of shears/scissors from home depot in the tool section work well too thats what I use . After they bleed out take the ax to take off the legs right below the meat thighs, and to remove the wings. If you try to use the shears, it will dull them REALLY fast.
