Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

How about Sig?

So you're going to butcher them? How old do they have to be?
I haven't thought that far ahead

I have to get the darn things to hatch first

Great names! We will have to have a name a thon WHEN not if they hatch.
I cannot wait to see my first Emu baby emerge from those big green eggs!
It takes 52-55 days to hatch ~ THATS ALMOST 2 MONTHS

I set
2 EMU Set DEC 28th Hatch day FEB 19
2 EMU Set JAN 5th Hatch FEB 26th
3 EMU set JAN 19th Hatch MARCH 12 (but I want it on my B-day the 11th!)

~~~~
I have 6 more flying to me from California! Hope to buy some more at auction this weekend too!
I can fit 40ish EMU eggs in my bator
SO if I have to wait 52+ days I might as well fill the bator right? Can't let all those empty racks stay like that.... That would just wrong... Yes thats what I need to keep telling myself!
I would die of impatience. Glad you're hatching them and not me.
Speaking of which, you can't candle those, can you? Rotten emu egg. Now that's a scary thought!
Was not going to start incubating anything until next month. Now that I got those duck eggs, now I want more. Right now.
Speaking of names, anybody have a good name for a welsh harlequin drake? He just went to the vet and is on meds for his sinus infection, so I'm pretty sure he'll make it. Little bugger was way underweight when they weighed him - apparently being the lowest drake on the totem pole in a flock with six males and two females wasn't sitting well with him. I'll get him fattened right up :) Only one of the girls has a name right now - Dove - so anything that kind of goes along with that would be perfect. I also seem to sort of have a food theme going on with my birds so that would work too.
So you can't even tell if they are bad or developing ~ So unless they blow up or start to smell, its all a surprise! YOU HAVE NO FRIGGIN IDEA how excited I am to hatch an EMU !
I have read you can weigh them, & you can set them out for 5-10 minutes & if they are still warm a baby, if cold bad.... And I guess when they are close to hatch they wiggle & you can talk to them. I can't believe I want to raise EMU's
Holy cow, you're worse than me about not planning ahead. :) And my middle name is Impulsive.
Started small QUAIL pen
Have been wanting Emu's for a year now, and have read bunches, talked with actual Emu farmers getting advice & am going to visit to see how they keep them and get an idea of pens etc.
I do not see why I should build (what I really mean is hubby) any pens, until I know how many I hatch, sell, or if I hatch anything. Emu's lay only 27ish eggs ~ once a year. So this is a one time shot, til next year. And the long gestation doesn't give you much time to re-set. I also need to make sure I get at least one male & one female. You also don't want them hatched to far apart or a single lonely Emu Chick. Finding a supplier of eggs is also hard to find ~ At a good price
So in one year I got hubby to help and agree ~ from Quail to Emu's
Of course. No sense in wasting space.
