Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Has anybody ever had to put a dog to sleep cuz of old age? My poor girl can barely get up the stairs. Tonight she tried to get up and fell back down from the 3rd step.

I can't imagine having to make this decision. She is such a great dog. We love her so much. :(

My dad had to put down our family dog almost 3 years ago because of old age, we got her when we first moved to vermont, she was my first dog, and to make it worse i wasn't even in the same country when he did it. she was almost 15 and for a shepard that is really old

I am so sorry you are going through that!

Putting one of your pets down is really hard. We just put Widget my cat down that was close to 12. But that wasn't our first. Lets see there was Pepper, a min-pin, my cat Spunky, almost 20 years old, Sarah, our 13 year old black lab (that was one of the hardest to for). She had pancreatic cancer so we had to decide when the time was right but she let us know herself. Don't wait too long. Don't keep her just because you love her and can't do it. It sounds like she is ready to go to rainbow street. Talk to her and she will let you know that she is ready. And then do it. Be with her when the vet puts her to sleep and stay with her till the end. She will need you there and it will help you get through it easier. Then say goodbye to her and take her home and bury HR.
