Too Early for Feb Hatch-A-Long Thread??

Hatch day is in two days (the tenth)!!! I am so excited! The eggs are already in lockdown (I actually did lockdown a couple days ago).

Candling was good. I think I took out almost a dozen eggs, but that's only because most of those that I took out weren't fertile. I love watching the chicks move inside the eggs!

I placed paper towels on the floor of the bator, partly because I've heard styrofoam is hard to clean and partly because I feel like the weird screen floor of the Hova incubator would hurt the chick's feet. I took the eggs out of the turner and layed them on their sides. Filled up the biggest trough full of water like the instructions said.

As advised, I won't open the incubator until several chicks have hatched and are nearly dry. But I can't say I'm too happy about that because there aren't very good windows on the bator and I can't see many of the eggs. What I can see is blurry. Danget, I guess I won't get a good view of the hatches. Oh well, can't be helped now.

Now I wait...:hmm:fl:drool:barnie:he (Emojis help me demonstrate my emotions best)

I do the same thing with mine when I'm hatching. I will put down papertowels about two or three deep so it's a little bit cushy and it also absorbs any liquid that leaks when they are in the process of hatching.

not sure if my air cells are big enough yet so we are starting out lock down dry. I have the well and sponge in the hatcher and a tube coming out to the outside of the hatcher so I can add water if they start pipping but until then I'll just let them get settled and hope they lose a little more fluid.

Both the last 2 chicks were dead in the shell. One had tried to pip, the other still had its head down. Cleaned the incubator down and set 8 of the Japanese quail eggs. So ive got 4 to swap out when i check for fertility. Or 4 to send to my mum to put under her broody.. we will see how it goes. Im not adding water this time until later on if I need to. Dont all laugh at my mini incubator :lau. I did get 5 chicks out of it :yesss:. And its not upto temp yet.

Glad you got those cute babies!! I hatched about 40 ga bobwhite quail last spring & they were popping like corn! I think whatever works for you with an incubator is best. There are people I know who do only the foam incubators and have their system/process with great success and my friend who is a single mom with a busy job & kid with disability who has bought the most whizz-bang self regulating incubator at great expense so she just doesn’t have to worry/think about it. It takes all kinds! :love

We only want a few birds so the little mini is fine for the mini eggs and what we need. But I am eyeing up the brinsea mini as it will hold more eggs. Maybe down the line... My mum had said she will take the spare 4 to put under broody so thats ok :).

While carrying something into the kitchen I sideswiped the incubator. Sending eggs colliding against each other in all directions!!!:th A quick candling revealed one is cracked from top to bottom. I put some nail polish on it and hope it can hang in there till Wednesday. Man, what a clumsy thing to do. These are day 17 eggs! Guess I should be happy it's just the one egg. It was one heck of a hit.

The color I used on the repair is called "Free Fall". I can't figure out if that's a good or bad omen.:idunno:lau

:th I nearly fell over when I saw the red line, lol. I'm so glad it was only one egg! I hope it still hatches for you! This is why I find myself placing towels around my incubators all the time, I'm soooo clumsy!

I just popped two more ko shamo eggs into the 'bator. Might have some little leap year babies :)

Guess the next batch I set I'll have to post about in the March HAL thread, haha.

Fingers crossed for a great hatch! I'm already in the March hatch-a-long too, lol. Getting goose eggs in a few days!

For future reference, you may find you like using the no-skid shelf liner! It's inexpensive and gives the chicks a nice surface for their feet to grip. I started using it after seeing so many other use it.

Looks like a lot of little ones will be hatching in the next few days! :wee

I've got 11 little silkies from my paint pen due on the 11th myself. :D

Of my 16 shipped silkie eggs that are due on the 22nd I've got 8 going strong, 1 that looks like it may have just quit or is in the process of quitting (no movement, blood vessels looking too sparse) and the other 7 are clear.

:fl Fingers crossed for a great hatch! I find myself hoping my blob egg will pull through because it has already made it further in development than I expected and I promised I would go in an look to see what the blob was if it quits...

2 more hatched out overnight. The 2 eggs left have not pipped. I held them up to my ear I cant hear any tapping. I'll drink my coffee and go candle them. All 5 chicks are under the heat plate. Not got any to eat yet.

Congrats!! So tiny and sweet!!! I did a spoon photoshoot with my quail chicks last time but she pooped in the spoon on the second photo...so it didn't last long. lol!

It's like a desktop sized incubator!!
