Turkey Hatching Eggs from Murray McMurray?

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum. I've raised heritage chickens for awhile, and I'm branching out into Freedom Ranger meat chickens this year. I'm also hoping to start raising heritage turkeys for meat.

I'm wondering if anyone has ever purchased Murray McMurray's "Turkey Egg Assortment" (https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/turkey_egg_assortment.html)? I have an incubator, and my family enjoys hatching our own eggs. And this route is much cheaper for heritage turkeys. There are no reviews on their site, though.

Anyone ever tried this?

A long time ago I bought Bourbon Red hatching from Strombergs. The USPS is no longer reliable for proper handling of shipped hatching eggs.

If at all possible, check for a local source for the turkey hatching eggs. You will have much better success hatching local eggs versus shipped eggs.

I can't speak to MM specifically, but as far as turkey hatching eggs some of it may depend how far you are from wherever they ship from. Best to source eggs from as close to you as possible, and preferably pick them up in person. I realize this often isn't possible. I myself ordered some from halfway across the country and of the 12 eggs, only one hatched. Luckily I also hatched chicks. I consider myself good at hatching, but shipped eggs are very hit or miss. Traveling at high altitude, bumpy handling and drastic temperature changes are all factors. In the end, it really wasn't a good deal. I initially paid less for the eggs than poults, but since I only got one poult it wasn't a bargain at all.

I agree with the previous posters...

Adding your general location to your profile can help folks make the best suggestions possible.

For example, I know of two places that could offer fertile heritage turkey eggs for local pick up... one in northern California and the other in Southern Oregon.

If I had the opportunity, I might also wait for a sale at Porters', they have put some exceptional ones on last year. Doesn't look like they sell eggs though, so might not be the best suggestion.. but do check them out, as it's a fantastic site...

One other suggestion... chat with your local feed store if you have one. They often work with or know other locals (or have posting boards) that they can put you in contact with other community members. My LFS told me they had a terrible time selling heritage turkeys from their usual local last year and wouldn't be accepting any more for consignment so post on the board if I wanted.

Heritage turkey's are quite the characters! Ultimately too much for me, but a lot of fun none the less.
