Turkey Talk for 2014

I have had a tire in my BR pen since early spring only to find it won't work. My hens have been sitting on eggs forever and they cannot get their bodies flat enough to lock down the eggs to hatch.
So we put a extra large tote in their pen for them to share for their eggs and babies to hatch. The hens were very leery of it. They finally got in on the eggs late yesterday. I hope it will work out better for them and the babies. I piled a a ton of shavings in it for them. Today they seem more settled with it.

This is good to know. I always heard of people using tires for nests and thought it was a smart idea.

I tried a tire for one pen that lacked a proper nest box and the hens wouldn't use it. I filled it with mulch almost up to the brim.

I have a friend who's chickens took over her tumbler style compost bin for a nest box. It would be plenty big enough for a couple turkey hens to sit together and it's up off the ground. I'm jealous of it!

So I am a bit disappointed with my Porters order. As time goes on & I look at my birds I am not sure I was sent what I ordered, or what these guys were marked as. I realize there was a disclaimer about ordering Penciled Blue Palm that some may be regular penciled, but out of 7, I don't think I have any blue penciled. One is all white which Porter said may be a red penciled. For me, to have 7 and none be the right color is really unacceptable. I would understand if half came out the regular color but ALL of them? On top of that, the only chocolate penciled I had that had any chocolate on it didn't make it, the others are all white. So again I am wondering whether the poults were marked incorrectly or if it is just a huge variance in color, which I know is possible. Of course, there are no photos for reference of penciled blue or penciled chocolate poults on Porters website. Very frustrating. Does anyone happen to have photos of any of these color varieties as poults? I would be super grateful if I could take a look at them.


At least my Silver Auburn, Blacks & Blue Red Bronze are correct.

Here are photos of the chocolate penciled I got from him in 2013. One is all yellow with just a trace of chocolate stripes on the head, the other is more highly marked.
