Turkey Talk for 2014

So I am a bit disappointed with my Porters order. As time goes on & I look at my birds I am not sure I was sent what I ordered, or what these guys were marked as. I realize there was a disclaimer about ordering Penciled Blue Palm that some may be regular penciled, but out of 7, I don't think I have any blue penciled. One is all white which Porter said may be a red penciled. For me, to have 7 and none be the right color is really unacceptable. I would understand if half came out the regular color but ALL of them? On top of that, the only chocolate penciled I had that had any chocolate on it didn't make it, the others are all white. So again I am wondering whether the poults were marked incorrectly or if it is just a huge variance in color, which I know is possible. Of course, there are no photos for reference of penciled blue or penciled chocolate poults on Porters website. Very frustrating. Does anyone happen to have photos of any of these color varieties as poults? I would be super grateful if I could take a look at them.

At least my Silver Auburn, Blacks & Blue Red Bronze are correct.

When I ordered Penciled Palms (6) in 2013, I only got 2 Penciled. The others were Red Penciled (2) and Chocolate Penciled (2). I did luck out and the 2 Penciled were a sexual pair, but the other 4 ended up being all toms. I think at the time, he was keeping a separate pen of Red Penciled (which breed true) so he knew those 2 were Red. He told me he was using a new, young Penciled tom who was not getting the job done, so he had to switch toms, but didn't want to hold up my order since I wanted the earliest shipment possible because it gets hot here so early in the spring. Since that time, he stopped keeping a pure Red Penciled pen, to save space, so when ordering Penciled Palms you have the possibility of getting Penciled, tricolored Penciled, or Red Penciled.

Because the blue gene doesn't breed true, if he has a Blue Penciled over Blue Penciled, you could get Blue, Lavender, or regular Penciled Palms. You could ask him what the tom and hens are that he is using. You could get 100% Blue Penciled if you had a Lavender Penciled with regular Penciled. I wouldn't think you'd get a Red Penciled unless that was a substitution (in which case wouldn't it be marked as such?) or unless he has tricolored Penciled or Red Penciled in with his Blue Penciled. Which wouldn't make sense to do, I don't think.

The problem is that I did not order any regular penciled at all. I only ordered the blue and the chocolate penciled. It did say that due to the slate gene 3 results occur (blue, lavender & regular penciled) & they would do their best to only include those which they thought would turn out to be blues. I received 7 "Blue" & 5 "Chocolate" which was marked on my receiving list and i counted the poults as marked for variety when I got them. 2 Chocolate have passed away, 3 remain and all are yellow with solid white feathers (one that passed did have some chocolate on it, bummed we lost that one). That being said I don't know how I would have received a red, and yes it was marked as a blue penciled. If I remember correctly red penciled were not offered for sale this year. I sent a few photos of my penciled poults and he said it's difficult to tell color so early but he was quick to guess the all yellow poult (marked blue) was red.

Here are photos of the chocolate penciled I got from him in 2013. One is all yellow with just a trace of chocolate stripes on the head, the other is more highly marked.
Did these marks fade by 2 weeks? My poults are almost 2 weeks old. I will try to find some good light in the house to get pictures for you. There is no discernible markings on their head except the colored marker that told me which variety they were. I don't think they had any before but could be wrong. Only one did for sure and it's the one that died; that one also had chocolate on feathers coming in.

I took the chicken eggs away from my turkey hens Thursday. They had 3, but not the original ones. They smashed a bunch, stole more, had a bunch disappear. I couldn't keep track. Looked like they all started, but quit. They were all pullet eggs. So I took out the dog houses the turkeys use. Now they are stuffing themselves in the chicken boxes anytime they find an egg. I've been checking several times a day since one will sit on an egg and the other sits on top of the first one. Today I watched one of them shove her head under a hen and search for an egg. She tried pulling the egg out of the box, then she was lifting the chicken and trying to shove her out with her head. I went over and rescued both the egg and the chicken. It's too hot for sitting. I hope I can convince them to wait until closer to fall.

Poor things they just can't help themselves.
