So yesterday I found a mom chicken walking around with 3 healthy looking babies, I ended up finding her nest and 3 other healthy babies as well. After further inspection though I found 2 baby chicks that look like they had been squished under some eggs that didn't hatch. I put the mom and all the baby chicks into a pen, I put the unwell ones in a wooden laying box off to the side with a heat lamp over them, I didn't want to take them away from the mom and have her never accept them back. MISTAKE. (One of the baby chicks seems very bad off, opens only one eye and could only move one wing but by the end of the day it was able to move the other wing free. The other chick was unable to hold its head up at all and by the end of the day it was able to do that and walk around easier) I've been giving them water from a syringe ever hour and I've tried to get them to eat some soaked chick food but not much luck. This morning I went out to see that the better off one wasn't in its wooden box anymore but squirming by the healthy babies, looks like it got trampled or pecked at. They both seem to have neck wounds. I rinsed both cuts, then put polysporin on. I don't know what else to do I really want to help them.

Here are pictures of the baby chicks, very young. And yes they look in horrible shap but if there is anything I can do to save them I will. However, if they're only suffering please tell me how to painlessly put them down for both them and I.

I didn't get any responses on this, however if anyone does see it: update, the baby chick that looks worse off (2nd pic) passed away quickly, I did everything I could for her and was planning on culling her. The other one is drinking and eating (a small amount) so I am hoping she can recover still, I am currently watching tv while I hold her to my chest

Hi @SaoirseG1713 :frow Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry you lost one of the babies. It's sounds like you are doing everything you can for your little one at this time. Keep trying to get fluids and a little food into her - sometimes if they are tiny, wet chick starter may be easier to eat than the dry crumbles. If you have poultry vitamins, you can mix a little of those in her water.

For the wounds - treat them like you have been - if you need to, you can trim a little of the fluff out of the wounds to keep them cleaner - she will be losing that downy very soon as she grows anyway:)

You may need to keep her separated until the other chicks have been weaned from Mom - I don't believe she will allow her near the others. Once she is old enough - start the integration process http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/introducing-a-single-hen-to-an-existing-flock
I hope she recovers, keep us posted.

@Wyorp Rock Hey there, thank you for your response! I am giving her water from a bowl of wet chick grower, I'm hoping that if she can't swallow the wet food that the water will hold some nutrients for her. I'm giving her water from the syringe every hour. I also put some of that purple spray on her neck to hopefully help it. I plan on putting more polysporin on it tomorrow as well as maybe flushing it out a little?

It may be a good idea to gently flush it - this way you can get a better look at it to make sure it's not getting infected.
I know you're doing everything you can - I hop she pulls through:hugs
