URGENT: predator got in coop, killed 2 chickens and injured 2 others

Any updates?

Yes. I don't think she's really bleeding anymore. I've tried cleaning her up again and I think I had some success this time. At the moment she seems to be doing okay for the condition that she's in but she hasn't really eaten or drank anything. I think the extent of the injuries is 2 wounds on the top of the head, maybe a cut on the side of her face? (I can't tell because of her dark feathers) injured comb and an injured eye.

Keep us posted on how she is getting along. If you see any green skin, that is normal bruising. Do you have triple antibiotic ointment, polysporin, or bacitracin ointment? Those are very good to keep wounds from drying out and will help prevent infection. Below are some of the products we have recommended for wound cleaning twice a day:

Thank you. She's doing about the same so far. I've attempted to trim the feathers around the injuries although I didn't really do a good job of it because the feathers were really matted. I did get her to drink some water though, so I guess that's a good thing. I don't have any of the things you listed and I won't be able to get any of them tonight.

You should take the bad one to a vet that sees chickens as soon as possible! Or even better an avian vet. If she is in a great deal of pain, you may dissolve 5 aspirin per gallon of water and let her drink that--it should reduce the pain. Make sure she is no longer bleeding since aspirin thins the blood and can increase bleeding.

Good point about being careful with the aspirin. It would be hard to know if she has any internal bleeding.

Hopefully she can heal up just fine. Chickens can be amazingly resilent. I had a chick that got into an adult pen once and she was scalped by the adults. She had a horrible wound and skull and a tiny bit of esophagus was showing. Amazingly, the tissue closed up in a short period of time and she lived several years until she was taken by a predator this spring. We were going to put her down when she was scalped, but when I gave her to my husband to cull (twice), she would run under my legs like I was momma and it broke my heart. She did not seem to be suffering and she ate and drank normally, so I put neosporin on her wound, isolated her, kept the wound clean and open to air, and it closed up quickly. She ended up being one of my favorite birds, a total sweetheart and a good layer. She did have a bald spot on her head and neck because the other birds would pull out the new feathers every time she moulted, but she was a great bird.
