Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Thanks all for the warm welcome! A little more background on me and our chickens - I'm new to chickens as of two years ago when we got our first chicks from the local Del's .I have been interested in them for awhile, but my DP had them as a kid and thought it would be too much work on top of our full time jobs, but then she surprised me with a chicken tractor (one of those a-frame things that's supposed to hold 6 chickens) for my birthday.

As it turns out they are not too much work, especially since our GSD has taken over guard duty (after eating most of the first batch) and we don't need to lock/unlock them every day or move the coop several times a week. Plus they are much nicer pets than either of us anticipated. Rather too nice, as the plan was for them to be for the soup when they are done laying. Part of the long term plan to improve our ecological impact and become more food independent. That is still the plan, but it will be tough to slaughter them ourselves, and I hope to find someone we can trade slaughter duty with so we don't have to slaughter our own. Or maybe when we have more it won't be so tough.

We are planning to expand by another 5 this spring. Easter Egger or Ameracauna, Welsummer, Maran, Barred Rock. Maybe a rooster (we have the neighbor's blessing) if we can find a nice one. Anyone near Shelton or Oly hatching any of these? Would rather buy from people than the feed store chain.

Also, saw mention of a chicken show in Monroe, any more info about it?

We have Marans and Silver Penciled Rocks in the incubator we may have extra it depends on how our first hatch/ science fair project works out.

I just made a red velvet cake for the first time in my life, first time making a cake from scratch too (not the feed but you know what i mean). It's my hubbies favorite kind of cake, he's out of state right now at his mothers visiting her. Perfect time to make his favorite cake.
My mom wants part of it because she's never had one made with fresh eggs and she thinks it will taste better then using stale (store bought) eggs.

I have been away all day so I'm a little behind on whats going on. I went to work for the first time in nearly 4 years today and it was wonderful. It will definitely be a transition for me. I'm use to working with 1200lb animals in the dirt for the last 4 years and am now working at Lowe's in the Lawn and Garden Center. I will still be working with 1200lb animals in the dirt but this new job will bring some much needed income as well as a new sense of purpose to my life. I will also be able to spoil not only my horses but also my chickens

Congrats on your new job! Oh I want a job so badly. It is just hard cause it has to be with in the hours that our kids are at school. Not many jobs will take me with those hours. I have been told about 7 time (at interviews) that I am perfect for the job in question but to come back when my schedual changes. You must be so happy and feeling good!

Im very happy. Its been way too long for me.

Sorry about that last one I'm using my phone and hit the wrong button. Have you looked at Territorial Seed Co. They are out of Cottage Grove Oregon and have a decent variety. We've pick our seed up from there for a few years now. Try them online www.territorialseed.com

The Olympia Co-Op has a nice selection of seeds, and they are very picky about what they put in their store. I heard there is a new Tacoma food Co-Op- have never been there, but they are easy to find in a internet search. they probably have quality seeds there?
