I go over the budget with our two teenagers so they can get some sense of what it takes.

Why doesn't it count? It says less than $500, Free is less than $500 right?

Even a paid for home has taxes, insurance, utility bills...

My yearly taxes are $500 or 42 a month, yearly insurance is $700 or $59 a month. I think I could get down to $500 a month or less fairly easily once the house is paid off. Ours is 3 bedroom 2 bath on 1.488 acres, so not that expensive actually.

ETA: Utilities are around $125-150 average here.

Our property taxes come to $400 a month... but then I guess my budget includes PITI that involves farm business assets and not just our personal residence.

Yeah, we just live average home and land, a real farm would be MUCH MUCH more costly! Of course, I think it'd be worth it

The new house is 1/2 the size of the old one, and it has central forced air heat running on natural gas... The old house was an old propane steam boiler..

Traded down size of house but doubled the amount of property
