Hi everyone!
I live in Miami and on my way home from work yesterday I stop at PetSmart to pick up cat and dog food. When I was getting out of the car I see a lady with a small box. As she's looking around mysteriously I realize she puts the box down on the side of a Coke Machine near the entrance of the store. She runs back to her car and leaves faster than a speeding bullet. I think, could it be a bomb? People going in and out of the store and nobody notices the box. So, hesitating I walk slowly to the ventilated cardboard box. OMG! I hear Peep and Squeak! when I open it a little yellow duckling all alone. Luckily, I was there at the right place at the right time. Poor baby, what a cruel thing to do. I walk inside the store, although they can't keep the little duckling, they call Banfield. A Pet Hospital, they are right inside PetSmart. A veterinary assistant checks out the little duckling and said it looks in good health. She explains what I should feed and how to attend the needs of him/her. By that time It's 4:50PM and I call my hubby. I tell him what happened and asked if he could pick up Manna Pro Chick Starter Non- Medicated Crumbles, 5lb bag as I was told at Banfield. I gave him the address of Sunset Feed & Supply. He had to hurry because they close at 6. I buy my pets their food and for the little guy the puppy pads. Well, long story short last night he must have missed his mama because he did not stop the Peep and Squeak. I decided to pick up baby duck, and hold close to snuggle into me. Hearing my heartbeat... no more Peep and Squeak...fell asleep finally. In the morning I called in sick! I couldn't go to work and leave baby all alone. In the afternoon baby duck started to eat a little and drink a little. When he starts the Peep and Squeak I pick baby duck then he quites down. I feel so bad for baby duck. All alone, no mama, siblings, in a strange house...so sad! I keep baby duck away from Toby, my Yorkie and Milly, my cat. I'm trying very hard to be a good foster mom but it's never the same. I know ducks are social animals and that raising a duck away from other ducks is cruel (they absolutely need other ducks for their proper development). Besides ducks cannot be house trained – and he poops like every 10-15 minutes or so. I know ducks imprint as babies, he's already following me around, I guess it is their instinct to do so. Today, in the afternoon, I took baby duck out to my backyard. He followed me everywhere. He's so cute! I took some pictures that I want to share. I don't know how old or sex of baby duck. Unfortunately, I have to find baby duck a home. The only ducks around where I live that roam free are Muscovies. I've seen Muscovy ducklings, but baby duck doesn't look like any of them.

Can anyone tell me the breed of baby duck?

Thank You.

Glad to hear you saved the poor wee thing.
Can’t really tell what breed it is till it’s fully feathered.
Welcome to BYC :frow
I’m thinking it’s a Muscovy, but as I said, Can’t really tell till it’s fully feathered

The beak isn't quite right for a mallard derived duckling. I almost thought it was actually a gosling at first, but it's not. I'm not sure what exactly, but I really don't think it's mallard derived.

That has got to be one of the cutest Muscovy ducklings I’ve ever seen. As to gender, it looks male to me, but you can’t be 100% accurate until it gets older. It’s so sweet of you to rescue it! He is most likely crying because he is lonely and is missing you when you’re gone. Ducks are extremely social, even as ducklings, would it be possible for you to get him a friend?

Oh how sweet, looks like a muscovy. The ones you saw may have been darker colored, this one would just have more white. The good thing is that they are quiet.

Here's a free one that was posted in Naples 3 weeks ago. It might be a fully feathered duck by now but it might befriend your duckling. Since it is free it is probably already adopted but thought I'd share that with you anyway. https://fortmyers.craigslist.org/col/pet/d/naples-muscovy-duckling-free-to-good/6799725657.html
