What Breed(s) Do You Wish You Had?

Sounds like a neat guy! Can we see pictures? Please?

I have four chickens in my house right now while they get some more feathers on them. Ameraucanas and Lavender Orpingtons. I can legally fit 7 chickens on my lot, hopefully 8 if I apply for and get a zoning variance (I'm a measly 39 sq ft away from that 8th chickie!)

My wish list:
Svart Hona
Swedish Bluebar (an Isbar and Svart Hona mix)
Salmon Faverolles (if only they DIDN'T have feathers on their feet!)
Fauvaucanas (maybe some exist without feathers on their feet, somewhere)
Light Brahma (again with the feathered feets ruining a perfectly perfect chicken breed!)

I also have a soft spot for Silver-Laced Wyandottes. I didn't love the ones I had as a child as much as they deserved. If I can find a breeder who focuses on good temperament, I may have to get some of them.

* * *

And if I ever live in a different home under different circumstances, a flock of female Sebastopol geese.
In my experience, feathered feet are no prohibitor and in fact serve as extra insulation in cold weather. Given good bedding the hens with give their feet all the attention they need. They add interest, as well.

So this is my current wish list that I hope to acquire in a decade or so when we hopefully move to an acreage. Assuming they will all still be at Ideal Poultry in Texas at the time..I read a list from 2009 where someone listed every bantam breed Ideal carries (they have 110 now but way more back then), and there were 58 Old English game, now there are 42.

Tentative list of 21 bantams

Silver penciled cochin, 2
Mottled cochin, 1
Partridge cochin, 1

Self blue d'Uccle, 1
Blue mille fleur d'Uccle, 1

Black Tailed Buff Japanese, 1
Mottled Japanese, 1

Columbian Wyandotte, 1
Blue laced Red Wyandotte, 1

Pearl Old English, 2
Blue Golden Duckwing, 2
Mahogany Old English, 2
Cream Buttercup Patterned Old English, 2
Silver Campine Patterned Old English, 1
Gold Campine Patterned Old English, 1
Gold Buttercup Patterned Old English, 1

I also might add a blue quail d'Anver and a birchen cochin. I was going to go with one of each but these are rare breeds that I can't replace unless I do another international order with Ideal. The ones with only 1 I could find similar but large fowl breeds or even the same in bantam from Performance Poultry in Canada. I'd just need to order the minimum of 5 and rehome 4 of them. I had a way bigger list a few years ago. Now I tried the KonMari method of breed selection. It is a home decluttering method where you only keep the things that "spark joy" So I went thru the list of bantams last night when the baby was sleeping and made this list when going thru bantams that somehow "sparked joy" when I saw the drawn pictures of them. Ofcourse they all sparked joy but these ones stood out a little more. Some I have had in the past but weren't able to keep. Also told myself that the hatchery birds won't look exactly like the drawings.

When the hens get broody which they will I might get local chicks or eggs since there's still other varieties that I want, just not all once. I know there are ways to break a broody but these are pets and broodiness helps the hens live longer, plus I think it'd be nice for each hen to at least raise one chick or two in her lifetime if it comes to that. With 21 bantams, I'll be lucky if only half are roosters. Some won't get along so I'll need several pens. At least they'll be pretty and help keep pests away.

Adding their "ideal" pictures for fun :)

Looks like some of their pictures aren't showing up...oh well, was fun clicking on them
