What did you do in the garden today?

Hey all, I'm back from OR. There is no way I'll be able to catch up, so I hope everything is good & gardens are growing! I expected mine to be a mess after being gone but it looks pretty good, I picked a few cucumbers & squash & will have green beans for dinner.

Need to pull the hard neck garlic & some shallots, the onions are getting huge, won't be long for them either. I have lots of tomatoes on the plants, but the plants aren't getting very big. But, it's been raining for a couple weeks now everyday so I'm not surprised I guess. Same with the peppers.

Happy gardening.

Good morning gardeners. Another day of monsoon rain. We've had over an inch since midnight. Fortunately there was a break in the rain yesterday and I was able to make the new rooster coop livable and secure so the littles are out in the big grow out pen and Randy is in his new home that is a bit more accessible for an aging rooster. Yesterday I picked the first handful of green beans, then this morning in the pouring rain I picked some more along with some chard. I found a slug in the bean patch and gave it a toss. The tomatoes are showing signs of rust from over saturation. We are supposed to dry out a bit tomorrow so I'll be spraying all the affected plants with fungicide. There are 9 tomatoes forming on one of my Early Girl plants. Hopefully they all make it. I may pull the rest of the carrots since the soil is so saturated. Just doing laundry today and trying to relax. I really hope is dries out enough tomorrow to mow the grass. It's getting pretty deep. I've read that electric pressure cookers are not recommended for pressure canning. I have the same type canners as @Acre4Me but I've only used it for water bath canning. I haven't needed to do any pressure canning but I could if I needed to in the future. As for Amazon, I check other websites when I'm looking for specific items and sometimes I find better deals elsewhere. I do like Amazon Prime because the shipping is free. There are a number of hard to find products that I use regularly and are always available on Amazon and reasonably priced, so they are good for that. Welcome back @Sueby. You missed out on some wicked weather while you were away. Have a great day everyone.

Oh, forgot that I have a question, for anyone who has done pressure canning with an Instant-Pot? Do you recommend it? I came so close to buying a fancy one today, that supposedly does pressure-canning, cooks rice, and does air-frying. I would love one appliance that can do all that, but at $200, I talked myself down and decided I should do more research. Then chatting at the checkout, the cashier said there were a lot of cases of them exploding!
Well I have mixed opinions, although my sister uses hers.
There are some foods that people are canning in it that are supposed to be canned in a pressure canner, but the canner isn't holding them in the safe kill zone for long enough, or barely long enough. Let me see if I can find you the youtube video on that. be right back

Miss me??? LOL. I was thinking of her test on the Presto pot. I haven't watched her Instant pot canner test yet, but here's the link. She's a professor and really takes this seriously.

That one is on safety.
THIS one is the instant pot.
She's says they're fine except for really THICK things, which is true of all pressure canners.

:eek:Exploding instant pots? You would think they would have to be safety recalled.

Not as exciting as an exploding instant pot, but years ago my cousin was teaching Dear Wife and me how to can goods. We were at her friend's house and had all 4 burners on the stove running hot. Everything was going fine, but then, all of a sudden, we heard a loud explosion outside and then everything went dead silent. We literally blew the electrical transformer for the neighborhood! That was the end of our canning party that day but the start of a good story for many years. Memories....

But, then again, we have found this to be true too. Multi packs of boring, but necessary items are easier to find for good price on Amazon. Not always, but always worth a check.
Men's razor blades from the manufacturer. SUCH a better price. LOL

Prime Free Shipping: but you have to watch that too. Sometimes the price is jacked up enough to cover shipping AND packing. But being a free market site, you have the choice to not buy it there.

No raccoon in the trap, no marshmallows missing, and the lid to the can was still on too this morning. I'll try again tonight. If they stay away, that's even better, but I'm not holding my breath.
THey have circuits they travel. You can do a hardboiled, peeled egg too, the scent travels further. So might not be back even tonight.

The circuit thing is interesting. I'll keep it baited for a while just in case and keep pestering my husband to help me finish the coop conversion. I wasn't sure about using an egg, etc since I don't want to catch a skunk or my outside cat. My understanding is that marshmallows are one food that raccoons like and most other creatures are not attracted to. Thanks
