What did you do in the garden today?

Trimmed a bunch of new growth on the lemon tree, moved some piles of dried branches into a wood frame. I’m going to add my next bucket of kitchen scraps to it, cover with shredded yard clippings, dirt and then some wire to keep the chickens out of it and compost right in the spot I’m going to plant in. The aloes and the other succulents are blooming, and the dragon fruit have a bunch of shoots. Next weekend we’ll run the shredder and work on the pile of trimmings from earlier in the year.

What's the pool for, chickens?

Yes, it gets extremely hot here in summer so I take a block of ice out daily to help them cool off. They can sip the water as it melts and stand in it. They get a mud puddle too, but the pool is pretty popular.

I did some adjusting to my garden plan. Then I started 6 cells of sugar beets. Just finished making butter and putting sourdough into bread pans for its final rise.

Has anyone ever started purple coneflower from seed? I have yet to see anything, and I planted them nearly a month ago.

Ditto with New England Aster, but that packet said 21-45 days. The packet said they were "Pre-stratified," so I didn't put them in the fridge for 6 weeks. I hope they were right about that.

I weeded and gave the chickens two buckets of weeds. Then I puttered around, then I started the pea trellis. How did that take up the entire afternoon??

Dang, that sounds like 3 or 4 days work to me. Wove scarf? Knitting?

I think I'll plant a row of onion set tomorrow. There's some room in the raised bed where I planted garlic last fall. For some reason, I have 500 onion sets.


300 Red Baron, hubby's favorite, and 200 Stuttgarter, a white onion that does well for me.
