What does "rehab" mean to you?

My son was in rehab, then therapy. After I said it out loud to probably a 100 people, I actually heard it! He had been in a terrible accident(12 years old) and was in physical rehab in the hospital for a month, followed with 2 years of physical and occupational therapy! However I don't think it is right for anyone to assume anything, unfortunately, most do.

When I hear rehab, I think drugs. Physical therapy or PT is what we call physical rehabilitation.

That's so funny to me that so many people think Rehab is drug related! I work in a hospital and we get pts of all sorts...physically impaired, mentally impaired, patients in detox, old ppl who fell etc. And I don't associate rehab with just one of these groups of people. To me when someone says "rehab" that had me wanting the next question to be "what for?" Because to me, rehab is anything that slowly progresses and returns a person to their best baseline possible. Idk... that's just my thinking. I'm kind of bummed that so many people look at rehab as drug related. Shows me theres an awful stygma out there.

I'm a nurse and to me rehab is drug/alcohol related. Physical therapy is medical. I have several family members that have been in rehab, and it wasn't for any physical injury LOL!!

I think drugs and alcohol when I hear rehab.
If someone calls my house looking for someone though I never say where that person is, I just say that person is not available right now and ask who is calling, after finding out who it is then I decide if I want to give any more information such as where they are or when they will be home.
If someone was in a physical rehab center though and I had to explain that I would have said just that, he is a physical rehabilitation center for an injury.

not that there's a right or wrong answer to this question, because there's not... but just found the conversation interesting and thought I'd look up rehabilitate.

I think physical rehab. not drugs and alcohol. I think that because I used to work at a rehab. center, which was just a glorified term for a nursing home.

I think physical rehab. I work in a hospital and a lot of patients get sent to "rehab" (physical).

If someone said "my .....(son,husband,etc) is in rehab" my immediate question would be what kind of rehab.

i would first think drug or alcohol.

but in my line of work billing for schools for Medicaid related services they would call general support services for PT, OT, Vision or other health related stuff as RA or Rehabilitative Assistance-rehab.
