What Dog Breed Do You Want Today!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I let Chase out every 3 hours. If you can't do that I wouldn't use a crate divider. I don't think it is fair to force the puppy to lay in waste.
Based on my (limited) experience with the two dogs we had and potty trained, giving them all the crate space actively harmed their potty training and prolonged the issue. They wouldn't hold their bladders because they could just go in the crate and get away from it. The idea isn't to limit to puppy to have barely enough room to lie down, but to give them enough room to curl up, stretch, turn around, etc. So, if the dog really has to go, they are still able to curl up on clean ground but it's not mentally comfortable because they can't actually get away from their mess. It will be a process of trial and error, I'm sure.

I completely understand and agree! I would use a crate divider also. I just think It kind of ruins the use of it if you are just going to let the puppy go in the crate anyways.

I definitely understand what you're getting at! I personally don't think it ruins the whole idea. Will the dog have accidents, yes, that's unavoidable, but for a good 80% of the time, the dog won't be in the position to have crate accidents at all. If I were to say "ah well, might as well give it all the room", that would have much more of a negative effect than the dog having recurring accidents.

I see what you're saying!! That does make sense.

Okay awesome, I pretty much had all of this stuff in mind, so this is great!
We are planning to use a divider because we will get a large adult dog crate, and it's just a 2m/o puppy, which would give enough space for the dog to pee in a corner and sleep in another (which we don't want).

Speaking of crates and potty times, I keep seeing for overnight training that people recommend having the pup by your bed for the first few weeks, but that's not an option. The pup is almost certainly going to go at least once overnight before we get up to let him out, and I'd feel bad for the pup having to sleep in pee for a couple of hours. Even if he's all empty before bed, a pup that little won't hold it for 8hrs. Any suggestions? I do plan for the dog to be on a puppy pad in the crate.
No a pup under 4 months wont be able to hold it for more than 3 hours.

I had slept in the living room for months with both pups every 3 hours they were outside.

Is there any way you can take him or her out atleast mid night. Like 2 am. I know its early but it will really help. And if its a boy they cant hold it as long as females i found.... tucker definitely had more accidents then denver

Yeah, I definitely know that they won't be able to hold it all night at such a young age. It's usually about 1 hour per month of age. I do sometimes wake up at 2ish. I was thinking a while ago that maybe I could just get up when I do wake up. The walls are thin too, and it's quiet here so I might even be woken up by whining, seeing as how I'm usually a light sleeper.
Sleeping in the living room where the pup will be isn't an option for a few reasons, but it's a good idea.

Baby monitors also work. Ive never used them but it would pick up the whining.

The one month per hour is good thing to go by but some are a bit different and need to be out quicker than others. It kinda depends male or femle as well .

sleeping in the living room for months wasnt fun, but i had the wrong room at our old house, the farthest and hardest to hear.
At our new house you cant yell room to room so a puppy would be hard

Good luck with your puppy!

Those crossed my mind too, we're just trying to spend as little as possible up front on this venture. We we need to do some tight budgeting around it, just because of current things to pay. There is still the possibility that we'll push off getting a dog even longer, but we both know that this is a golden opportunity and I think the plan is to do what we can without shorting anything vital and not overextend our finances for the season.
Speaking of, if I can only get one or two brushes to start off with, what would be most recommended for handling a medium length haired dog with an undercoat?

I never used a crate divider personally, I had a huge crate and never had a problem
