Those crossed my mind too, we're just trying to spend as little as possible up front on this venture. We we need to do some tight budgeting around it, just because of current things to pay. There is still the possibility that we'll push off getting a dog even longer, but we both know that this is a golden opportunity and I think the plan is to do what we can without shorting anything vital and not overextend our finances for the season.
Speaking of, if I can only get one or two brushes to start off with, what would be most recommended for handling a medium length haired dog with an undercoat?

Yeah, puppies can be expensive. But they don't have to be. Some people go way overboard and it is just ridiculous. Just get the bare minimum. It'll be fine!! I like undercoat rakes with the curved blades. Some say the cut the fur but I fell like if you are careful it's fine. Don't get a furminator though. Later it might be worth it for you to invest in a blower, you have a ton of shedding coming your way.

A slicker brush and under coat rake, without blades, works great

Will a furminator cause damage? Is there something better that won't cause issues but will still deshed?
