*UPDATE*

OG is staying at the vet to undergo a procedure to remove the black holes of demonic doom, clean her out, and stitch her up.

Doc says the black spots appear to be dead/dying breast muscle tissue and that the wound simply isn’t healing up (or maybe it can’t, I don’t know).

So she’s going to remove the dead spots, clean her up/check out the unseen areas once she’s opened and hopefully some stitching should be enough to send this to the finish line of healing.

No suggestion on cause of wound though she did say looking at it from the inside might be able to help.

Either way, we’re still open for snapper bite, infected feather follicles, puncture/impale wound or some small pellet-esque wound.

All I know is I don’t have the money for my damned heart LOL. She said necrotic tissue and I burst into stupid tears. I mean duck is perfectly damned fine (albeit grumpy) but I got all sensitive thinking her parts were falling off like a leper. So I paid for the procedure and *fingers crossed* I can pick her back up later today. 2 hour drive each way... I’m not certain I have the patience for that. So I’m beebopping around in City killing time.

Obviously, I will update as I get her later.

But in the meantime, here’s a picture or two of her on the ride to Indy. She was having no part of having the lid on and INSISTED on being able to see.

:love and :fl
I love the pic with just her head over the top of the tote. Looks like she's grinning at you!

Glad you're able to get the surgery and I hope it goes well.
Since you don't know the history of your duck, ask the vet if these necrotic spots in the breast muscle are consistent with Tylan (tylosin) or oxytetracycline injection site necrosis.

Oooh, good thinking!

And yes, that outside the car pic... I just had to! I stopped to get my double fists of coffee and a guy walked out and walked back in and said “you’ve got a (Friggin) duck in your car!?” I laughed and looked and her little head was popped up like that. I told him yeah... we’re roadtripping. He says ducks are mean. I told him she’s only mean if you have shiny rings on because she wants to eat them. But it tickles and doesn’t hurt... not like geese LOL

I had to rehome a drake a couple of weeks ago (had too many) and met this wonderful lady at the gas station close to my house. When I pulled in, she wasn't there yet, so I got out and was talking to the duck. Guy parked next to me opened his door and said "I thought I heard a duck quack". :gig

You had better looked at him like “what? You don’t talk to ducks!? Rude!”

Ducks are so-so listeners but OG is definitely upping her contributions (quackbeeeching) to the conversation :rant:lau

Stopped at a Fazolis to feast my face with cheap pasta (I’m a comfort eater dangit!) and I checked in and I’m glad I did!

I absolutely will (because I am trying to brace myself for NOT knowing what this was caused from but at least it’s another lead!) and I will be off to google what in the sounds-horrible-as-it-is type of ducky heck that is!

"black holes of demonic doom" instead? ;)

Yes! @biophiliac and @casportpony: necrosis/necrotic is just so... I’ve done forensics and all the grossness that comes with that by when it’s animals, dangit, no negatively intended words.

I kid, I kid. I am a bit of a realist in that the night before Lucy died, I had to have a sit down with kiddo because... well... life?? I think I just need to make sure OG’s little birdy boobies need to stay put and not go wandering elsewhere.

I’m okay with boob implants; ducks or otherwise

Stuff them poor deflated bird boobies with some of the wayward down/feathers. She’ll have the best duck rack this side of the Ohio river.

ETA: Forensics classes. I was 1/3 of a way through my undergrad in Forensic Sciences and then (blammo) calculus and physics.

That’s when I shifted degrees LOL

STUPID MATH :he

*UPDATE-IER UPDATES*

We’re 5 minutes from home as I am stopping for tonight’s dinner (Pizza :sick)

She has been the most quiet she’s ever been. Even pre-dating my purchase of the house and we were just looking the property over! LOL

She has officially earned a reputation as a mouthpiece at the clinic. They were just laughing that before she went under she was strutting and quacking and telling everyone that she was plum down tired of this manhandling and abuse :lau

Procedure went, apparently, perfect with no hiccups and she otherwise looks healthy with no issues.

Removed two sections of necrotic breast muscle and she has dissolving stitches in. Go back on the 19th for post-op recheck.

No antibiotics needed as vet said there was no signs of active infection but I need to keep an eye for any symptoms going forward.

Otherwise, and here’s the suck part, she has to stay dry, clean and try to not let her flap her wings (being that those are moved by breast muscles). So we’re not bandaging her wings down (seemed a little unsafe to me and vet agreed) and we’re just going to keep her separate from RapeyMcRaperton FattyPatty.... until *at least* the 19th.

If a stitch pops I have to drag her back in ASAP.

They said I could put her cage outside with the friend so they’re not lonely but I don’t know if that’s ideal?

Also- should I still allow Fatty Patty to go to her run during the day? It’d leave them separated again but I suppose I could put OG/her cage outside with her... but I just feel like that’d be a huge tease.

This’ll be fun.

I’m open to suggestions on cages because all I have right this moment is my terrier’s dog cage and it works well but I have to get on my hands and knees to get the bird out and I feel like much great struggling will occur.

Looking for one that maybe is tall enough but open on top *OR* has an opening at top where I could just reach down and scoop her up?

This is for checking on stitches each day and cleaning the poop.

Oh! And one of you awesome BYC’ers gave the hide-a-pill-in-bread idea and it’s absolutwly going to pay off because the pain pills I had previously picked up? Doc says go ahead and give those to her now. I absolutely agree with that one.

My goodness I’m glad this part is over, and with no problems, but lord I’m tired of crawling through duck poop :fl

This is just what I had wanted to hear. It is just so cool how an organism is so often able to defend itself from toxic, foreign or n***otic material that can't be expelled by resorting to plan 'b', in OG's case she created a tubular barrier around the offending material to keep it from spreading or harming her further. And you, OP, deserve the utmost respect for what you have done for this duck!! Two thumbs up.:bow

Ps So post surgery or any trauma to speed healing and reeduce pain I give a couple of doses of Arnica Montana whether the subject is human, canine, feline, avian, ...whatever. If you want to test efficacy, try it on yourself sometime after an injury involving a wound or bruising. ;)

Took me a solid 2 minutes to find out what n***otic meant. You so silly *pushaw*

And while your understanding of the science behind it is things awards are made of, I agree on a more dunced level. The fact that there was this open wound and muscle tissue actually dying and being *gulp* necrotic to the max, br she had no infection, no swelling and seemingly no pain. The doctor couldn’t find the second hole so I felt like a snoopy snooperton and moved the boat load of fluffy down out of the way and she’s all “well I’ll be! I would’ve never found that one, it’s hidden very well.” So then I had to give the ol’ gangster waterfowl some credit for the fact that she had a pinky finger tip sized hole in addition to the big ugly and she was regrowing all of her fluffy warm goodness. And she had never shown any signs of these wounds or that something was wrong.

Whatever this poor girl has been through; I hope in her mildly feral (LOL) heart she knows she’s loved. Animals are funny but at the end of it, all of this craziness is in hopes that the back half of her life is better than the first.
