Definitely needed these words of encouragement. Just leaving her follow up appointment and while she’s not in any bad shape, she hasn’t made as much progress as was hoped for.

Apparently my switching to sand added with the initial use of veterycin spray caused some gnarly scabbing. I had only used the spray prior to setting up my hillbilly quarantine (rinsing off the poop that had gotten on the wound while she was in the dog cage) but I guess the moisture plus some sand granules has caused hiccups. Doc said it doesn’t help that it’s an intensive muscle wound and her ducky needs of those muscles but I still feel bad: like *maybe* she’d be better healed if I hadn’t done all that.

So, unfortunately, she’s still on segregation status but doc has given me the okay to expand her space to give her more room. Just can’t let her be free yet as we need to keep her still a little rested.

Gotta figure out a new set up for her (my hillbilly quarantine was because I couldn’t find a topless cage to save my life). So now I’m gonna see if I can find one on Amazon and maybe overnight it or something.

Also gotta go through and get rid of sand and put shavings back down.

But! I also got a thumbs up to spritz her with water (from above, still no wetness below on the wound) so she can Ben a cleaner duckie.

Oi vey.
:hugs

Unless they specifically said you need to remove the sand, I would leave it and just put the shavings on top. It's more padding and will let the moisture get away from her if she makes a mess with her water.

She said no sand and to use shavings. She didn’t technically say to remove the sand but since the sand is now moistened I have already just scooped it up and out. I’ve modified my hillbilly segregation chamber (and for the record I’m totally okay with the term, otherwise it’s simply gonna be called improvised containing system... too long winded) LOL

Will show updated results shortly.

(Sigh) just a bummer of a day with the golden lining being she’s still otherwise okay.

Okay; here’s updated improvised containment system - ;) -

Yeah... she was QUITE pleased with herself. She only does the escape artistry when car is parked and I walk away for something. She bolted out of the tote (I leave lid ajar so she doesn’t get all pant-y like the first time) and then lands on the dash board, skids down enough that she then has one wing on the dash, one wing on top of her tote and is in full on freak mode.

Of course I am too at this point because I’m seeing broken wings, popped stitches and the whole nine.

So I’m grabbing her like (in my minds’ eye, most literally) her life depends on it. And what do I get in return? She beans me repeatedly with her wings while using her little ducky talons of terror to then proceed to crawl up my torso and wedge between my head/shoulder and the door.

So then I’m trying to not have her terror talons tear my coat (dangit, it’s an L.L. Bean!) while also not wanting her to slice my jugular, but also not wanting her to pop a stitch or break a wing.

Obviously I managed to get her back in the tote. But I remember putting the lid on top and actually telling her “you need to sit and reflect on your behavior,”.

This duck, I swear.

Oh!! And so I have her in her new upgraded containment chamber and I look out the French door and she’s limping! I actually got mad for a minute. Like I scolded her and said “you need to quit your melodrama; it’s not going to get you out of there and frankly, I’m tired of it today.”

She still limped for about another hour or so, and it’s seemed to subside, but the only thing I can think of is she was sooooo confined that she couldn’t roam and flap and stretch her legs. But then I remember having to shoo her around to clean her little triangle of rehabilitation and so I’m going to (for my own conscience) say it’s because she’s stood for like 80-90% of the last 11 days.

I’m still telling her to stahhhhhpit!

Since it looks like you are getting more ducks, and you likely will be putting them in the car a few more times.... if that tote isn't anything special to you, might want to cut a hole in the top that is big enough she can stick her head and neck out, but can't do her grand escape. Then she has air, can see what's going on, and can't escape and scare both of you half to death.
