What is Your Favorite Christmas Dish? (PARTY!)

I have a confession : I hadn't ever watched A Christmas Story until about 5 years ago. And I didn't get it. But as it was on for 24 straight hours, it finally hit me. Now it's an annual must ( but my kids still don't like it.... Bah humbug

The author of the story, Jean Shepard, used to be on late-night radio, telling funny stories. I first heard A Christmas Story on the radio, which has spoiled me for more recent versions.

I was a teenager, and listened to Shepard on my radio at night in my bedroom - the perfect setting for hearing about the illicit antics of Ralphie and his friends. Shepard (a man, in case the spelling confuses) had the perfect gleeful voice for it. (He may have narrated the movie. I can’t remember.)

I almost always prefer the original version, no matter what. I guess it’s part of getting older. The newer versions of things always feel to me like cheap imitations.

I love the old post-WWII Christmas movies, especially White Christmas, where the G I s come together to save their beloved general’s winter resort in a Vermont winter with no snow. Sentimental! I love it!

It’s not a party, but my real favorite is Christmas Eve candlelight service at church. Singing carols, listening to Luke, Matthew, the other Christmas stories from the Bible, a short sermon, then lighting candles while we sing Silent Night.

The first time I ever attended one, I was pregnant with my daughter. It was a tiny, beautiful church in Maine. We were singing about a baby being born with this beautiful service! I was bursting with emotions.

In recent years my daughter would visit and we would go to Christmas Eve service together at my church, arms around each other, both of us crying. But she has her own baby now, and I moved away from my church. We are building new traditions.
