I was forced to watch those old movies when I was a kid. And I would never have admitted it at the time but I loved them. Saving the Holiday Inn if I remember correctly. The author of the story, Jean Shepard, used to be on late-night radio, telling funny stories. I first heard A Christmas Story on the radio, which has spoiled me for more recent versions.
I was a teenager, and listened to Shepard on my radio at night in my bedroom - the perfect setting for hearing about the illicit antics of Ralphie and his friends. Shepard (a man, in case the spelling confuses) had the perfect gleeful voice for it. (He may have narrated the movie. I can’t remember.)
I almost always prefer the original version, no matter what. I guess it’s part of getting older. The newer versions of things always feel to me like cheap imitations.
I love the old post-WWII Christmas movies, especially White Christmas, where the G I s come together to save their beloved general’s winter resort in a Vermont winter with no snow. Sentimental! I love it!
