What Kind of treats can a chicken eat?

They don't need any treats at all. Treats can dilute the nutrition they are getting from their feed. But I do give my chickens treats near the end of the day after they've eaten most of their feed. I give scratch feed, and fruit and veggie scraps. They like cabbage, lettuce and other greens. I pull up clover and dandelion greens. I don't want to spend the $ on meal worms but there was an article about growing your own I'm going to check out.

I give my birds popped popcorn (no salt), deli turkey, berries, fruit, bread, spaghetti cut up and so much more. They love it. My birds are healthy and have never been sick. Its actually amazing they never got whip lash from running up to me at break neck speeds. If the food is messy i put it on a paperplate and wait til they are done.. usually 30 seconds for 11 birds. They are indiviuals so just because MY birds love spaghetti does not mean all chickens will love them. They have preferences too. Example most chickens will eat lettece or cabbage.. my birds wont touch it. Basically no sugar, chocolate, keep the salt low but this depends on their feed too. My birds get cracked corn plus free range 100% to forage so my birds have no added salt to their feed. I will occasionally crush up chips or give them a few french fries. Avacado and beans are toxic to chickens.

Oh I also crush up egg shells from their own eggs (in a bag with gloves) and it helps give the needed calcium for the next egg shell they lay. I let them air dry for a day or 2 first.

My girls get a mixed wild bird seed mixed 50/50 with layers pellets twice a day, scattered on the ground. They also get fruit occasionally like an apple, past its prime.
I also give them any soft shelled, thin shelled and cracked eggs raw, smashed on the ground. GC

Mine really like fruit, we give them the tops of the strawberries that we cut off, bananas seem to be a fav also. Of course all of this in moderation(because what Sue said is true about not needing treats). So I give them treats in small amounts that I deem to be "healthy" foods. Another thing that mine love that strikes me as goofy is smoked turkey:lol: When I smoke a turkey breast I give em the lean parts that I have trouble carving off for us.

I think chickens are very close to humans. The more natural you can have it the better. With a little added care and love to make it better. If you pay attention they will let you know what is best.
