Hi Guys, I have a problem with one of my ex-batts. She laid an egg yesterday and was fine this morning. then mid day today she became lethargic and started to breath through her mouth. it got worse through the afternoon and she is definitely wheezing and her whole body moves when she breathes. I took her to a vet but the bird specialist was on holiday. the vet had a look but couldn't really offer a solution.

Se will not eat or drink and won't even look at an earthworm, which would normally result in me loosing a finger to an eager beak.

Any ideas what it could be? I think I am going to loose this hen, but should I do anything to protect the others in the flock?

A bit more information would be useful:

You say she's an ex battery hen - do you have any idea how old she is? How long have you had her?
Have you made any changes in the coop or run recently (new bedding etc)?
Have you treated her or the others for anything else recently (eg dusting for mites)? When was the last time you wormed her?
Does her poop look the same, or has it changed?
Do any of the other hens look as if they are starting to show symptoms?

If you can answer as many of these questions as possible then it may give us some more ideas about what might be happening.
