Who else is on lock down?

First off, thank-you for raising a son to fight for the freedom some terrorists took away from us seven years ago.

Secondly, I had this same problem after a couple good hatches. It turned out that once the weather got warm, my room temps went down (air conditioning) and so, during the day whiole it was on and I was gone, the incubators temp went down. BUT when I checked the temps morning and night, they were at a steady 102-103.

Apparently during the day they were dropping to 99!!!

I have a still-air, so this is a VERY bad temp for eggies! Its like putting on a light jacket for a snowstorm!

This is especially true during hatching.

I hope this helps you for next time!

Oh, thank you for your comments about my son. I always let him know when someone says something like this. MANY of the soldiers coming home suffer from what used to be called 'shell shock', and I do believe it helps when people are appreciative.

Thanks also for your comments about the temperature in the bator. I think I may try to get a more accurate (and sadly more expensive) thermometer and hygrometer. I am not sure the ones I have are right.

I hope for something out of these showgirl eggs, but feel discouraged about them.

Only two of the Seramas hatched. At least these are good, nice active little guys, cheeping away, and SO friendly. They are right here next to me, and the minute they see me, they start cheeping to be picked up! I am more used to chicks running little Chicken Little when they see me--ACK! THE SKY IS FALLING DOWN!

I have 14 Serama eggs, same seller, under my broody "Big Momma", so it will be a test! I am not even going to candle them, lest I disturb the hen. I'll just be Big Momma does better than I did!

These eggs were all GOOD eggs. They had little swimming embryos in them on day 10. So it is ME, not the eggs.

Keep fingers crossed for hatching from ANY of these Silkie/showgirl eggs. I think I did them in. But we will see.

I would really like them to hatch, as they are next year's broodys. I hoped.

I am feeling down on incubators.

AND--today my EE Banties go on lockdown!

I am not going to take them out of the Genesis to hatch. I am going to leave all the eggs in the Genesis and take the turner out.

Unforunately, there are quite a number of eggs in the Genesis that are NOT ready to hatch, so I will just have to quickly reach in and turn them! I want to give the Genesis a chance to hatch these eggs, since I seem to be killing them by putting them into the LG.

And just for the record--yesterday I got 25 chicks from Estes Hatchery. They are GREAT chicks. Really nice chicks.

Just so your son knows there are people in this country that do appreciate the sacrifices they are making. I actually am a former woman marine. I've never seen combat, they did not allow us in the 80's but I pray for them everyday. I appreciate what they are doing for my children and grandchildren.
I understand your lament over the eggs. I don't know why I only get about 2/3 about what I get after day 18. This time I am trying the dry or low humidity and my hatch levels has gone up. I only keep them at 30%during days 1-18 and aim for 50-60% on days 18-21.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you have staggered hatches like that and keep opening the incubator to turn some eggs you're removing the much needed humidity and that is probably the reason your hatches aren't the best.

You should take the eggs out of the genesis because you're putting them at risk of failure every time you "quickly" open the lid to turn the other eggs.

There really is a reason for the 3 day lockdown.....

Next time try to put the eggs in the same day and you'll see you'll have better control over the temps and humidity and have more success hatching.

Good luck with your hatch. I hope it's better.

Thanks, Chic Chic (sniff, sniff).

Of course, I will take your words to heart. And I do see what you mean.

There are a couple of answers, of course.

1) Put my eggs in at the same time.

2) Hehehe. Get another incubator.

And actually, 2) is not really an option, because how could I justify getting another incubator when I am not hatching any to speak of in the two I have?

One is a still air LG and the other is a 1588 Genesis, which of course I am having high hopes for.

And I have to empty out the LG before I put anything else in, because it is getting icky.

I am sure a dirty incubator is not good either.

I will have to leave all the eggs in the Genesis, and I guess put in a damp wash cloth and mist over the eggs if I have to turn anything.

I am going to try to arrange hatches better in the future.

I cannot think of a better option. If I KNEW all those silkie eggs were done for, I could take them out, clean out the LG, and put the hatching eggs in, and go into lockdown with them. But I DON'T, and I can't just toss them on the chance that they might be bad. I am not at all good at candling yet.
