WICKED! (The Musical) (Other musicals welcome!)

There you go--- it reaches so many people on so many levels...that is part of the amazment about Wicked.

I read someplace that all the green girls in the world were in tears in the end. My seating row in San Antonio didn't have a dry eye for some reason....and in the long line to the restroom afterwards so many tears....(of joy). It got under a lot of people's skin. --

Hope you are doing a lot of defying gravity now-a-days.

woah..that must have been something to see. The Pantages is a great theater.

It would have been amazing to see Idena Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth -- but I also like every person who gets a meaty role like those -- and the variations that they incorporate. I saw something where Patty Duke Aston was playing Madame Morrible in the Seattle Production, and was the Broadway one where Joel Gray was the Wizard.

whew this thread is bringing it all back.

wouldn't it be great (eventhough movies can't hold a candle to plays) if Idena Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth got the movie roles. I know it wouldn't happen...because they are broadway names not hollywood names.... but that would be great for everyone.

That would be completely awesome. I don't usually like movies based on musicals as much as the musicals themselves, but the cast will make or break it. Rent was really good because a number of the original broadway cast was in there. I wasn't as impressed with Phantom of the Opera...and I just couldn't get into Cats very much. I like it and I like the music. I guess I have to watch it again because I missed the story somewhere.

Also, I've loved Idena Menzel for ages. I have her albums and I have Kristen's too. One of the reasons I was so excited to see Rent the movie was because of Idena. I also had moments of fangirl squee every time I saw either one of them on Glee or West Wing. I would love to see both actresses in the movie.

Just re-read part of my book about Wicked... Stephen Schwartz had to talk Maguire out of doing a movie and into doing a musical. One of his main points was that so much of the story is internal and couldn't be expressed well through a movie (i.e. via soliloquy or voice-over). I still think a movie would be interesting!

I *believe* Eden is back in one of the national touring companies currently (there are two at the moment, so it gets a bit confusing). I have heard great things about her!

I saw it the first time in New York, the following three times in San Francisco (the older sister of a friend from elementary school landed the role of Elphaba so I had to be supportive

). Next year will be number five. The funny thing is I had the same Glinda (Kendra Kassebaum) the first three times I saw the show, even though it was over a three year span. I love that you have a huge poster!!! The first time I saw it you could buy the poster with signatures of all of the cast members and so of course I had to! I still made my girlfriend at the time wait with me so I could get my picture taken with Elphie

Tylt33 you have such good taste in musicals. One of the amazing things about stage is that it can be subtly different each time. It would be so easy to see it so frequently-- And I bet that each time you saw something a little different and enjoyed it. How fabulous to have the cast signed poster. How fabulous to know Elphaba. wow.

One of my greatest "Wicked highs" was being in San Francisco on opening night of preview week (i.e. the week before the official open). That was followed by my biggest "Wicked low" when I walked in the theater and saw that the Elphaba I know (Teal Wicks) was replaced for the night by her understudy (Vicki Noon). OPENING NIGHT AND AN UNDERSTUDY ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Lol.

I'm on my way.

Regardless, I'm never going to let anyone set limits on me again without my willing consent.

How did the show grab you?

Did you get a chance to pick up the anniversary collector's edition of the soundtrack? It has a song that they had originally intended to be in place for the song "The Wizard and I," sung by Stephanie Block. They also have songs from the international shows in Japan and Germany. It gives some of those songs a different feel. "Popular" in Japanese sounds even cuter and "No Good Deed" in German sends chills up my spine. Even "As Long as You're Mine" sounds more seductive in German. Maybe it's just me.

We saw Patty Duke once in SF's production and the crowd went NUTS when she walked on stage!!! I have never heard that kind of applause for Madame Morrible!!! With a movie, it would all depend on the casting director. When "RENT" came out as a movie, they let most of the actor reprise their roles. Mimi Marquez was once exception, because someone felt that the actress was now too old to fill the role. When "HAIRSPRAY" came out, they made a big deal about picking people that hadn't played the roles before.... so let's hope for a good casting director?

This thread is great! I've seen Wicked twice now and LOVED it. I saw Phantom of the Opera probably a half dozen times as a kid - I think the first time, I was 12 or so. My best friend and I used to sit outside in my play house just belting away Phantom songs for hours at a time (and neither of us can hold a tune... I'm sure our neighbors loved us!!).

I was very disappointed in the Phantom movie because a movie can't capture the mood or energy the same way that a live performance can. I still watch it regularly to listen to the music though... usually while I'm cleaning the house or doing something else productive.

A bit of trivia, but Stephanie J. was the first Elphaba (she was even cast before our dear Chenny was cast as Glinda!). We went to Japan a few months back and unfortunately Wicked had closed there. I wanted to see it in Japanese pretty badly. In Japanese theater they change lead actresses and actors every act. It would have been worth it just for that!!!
