Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

HI all!

I'm taking a break from work (yes brought my work home with me again)...and had to share my news....I sold my first dozen eggs today!!!
wee.gif
I decided to post an ad at work on our internal "want ads" site. I got in this morning to 4 emails and one person IMing me asking for eggs. The first of the emails was a request for 5 dozen eggs!!! LOL. Anyhow I'm bringing 4 dozen (1 dozen each) to work tomorrow. Looks like I will be able to sell as many eggs as I can provide. I had another email from someone at another location (same company) with questions about getting into chickens!!! Ended up pointing 2 people to BYC and one specifically to this website-this is so kewl!!!

Update on Wally my rooster: Hes still acting under the weather-tonight was his first time up on the roost instead of the floor. And discovered he is extremely skinny. I fed him a mix of warm chicken mash with a lil sulmet mixed in-he only ate about a spoon full. So trying to figure thi sout..hes been fine. Then 2 weeks ago (MLK day) the side of his face swelled up. It was like that for 2 days, then it went away. A day or two after the swelling was gone he started acting sick/fluffed out/sleepy. I assumed this was due to the -20 temp at night. Thats been about a week. He is now pretty skinny but seems slightly better-but not much for an appetite. I dont beleive its worms-as everyone else is healthy, fat and sassy. Ive dusted them all for mites/lice....Any ideas? I wish I knew why his face swelled up-there was no sign of injuries. I am wondering if he got some sort of infection?

Cute pics of all the new babies-so jealous. And love the pic of the baby on its mommas back!

You must be doing something right & he must be feeling better if he's back on the roost. That's good news. Keep feeding him & making sure he's eating/drinking. How have his droppings been looking? No diarrhea?

Thanks CC! and I cant WAIT for the weekend. This week I started taking on 50% of a co workers workload on top of my own...(Till end of April) and its on the other side of campus..so mornings in one bldg, afternoons in another..Then evenings off to Bball games..its been a week of up at 6am and home at 10pm. Anyhow-Sat I plan on seeing if I can spend time around Wally and see how hes acting and hand feed him on and off all day. And hoping I can get a better handle on what his droppings look like...he isnt seperated from the others so havent been able to check. I also want to get some yogurt or some other priobiotics into him.

I need opinions..so selling eggs at wrork..wanted to explain that these eggs are not washed, their nutritional value etc and wrote up the following to put in the egg cartons: Is this a good idea or do I look like a crazy chicken lady like my SO thinks?

Hello and thank you for buying our eggs!
Us “girls” wanted to provide you with a few facts about our eggs:
Our eggs are unwashed since when we lay them, they are 100% sterile. When our eggs are laid, a coating or “bloom” covers the outside of the egg as a way to prevent bacteria from entering. As an egg cools after laying, the surface pores shrink and if washed can cause bacteria to enter-so you may see pine shavings occasionally on the shell from our nests.
We are feed a diet of chicken feed, allowed to play outside all day to find tasty treats in the yard which allows our eggs to be significantly healthier than store bought eggs (which on average are 30-45 days old when they reach the store). A study done by Mother Earth News shows that eggs from pasture raised chickens like us (vrs. Eggs from a chicken factory) contain:
1/3 less cholesterol
¼ less saturated fat
2/3 more Vitamin A
2 times more Omega 3 fatty acids
3 times more vitamin E
7 times more beta carotene
And contrary to popular thought, brown and white eggs are exactly the same nutritionally. We are pet chickens that are loved, and living in a chicken retreat unlike our sad cousins in the egg factoriess.
Thank you again for buying our eggs- This will go towards our owners buying us treats such as oatmeal for cold mornings, apples, watermelon, spinach and sprouts during the winter, and any other treats they can think of! If you would like more in the future, please let our owners know (And they would appreciate it if you were able to return egg cartons if possible).

Ahmelia, Petunia, Opal, Nellie, Debbie, Daisy-Mae, Thelma, Louise, Henrietta, Delilah, Hawkeye, and Carmelita and our buddies Wally and Donny-boy

Hi All!

Glad to see the hatchings are going good!

Nothing much going on here. Getting some wood tomorow (today to most of you).
I'm trying to break the broody hens. I took them outside and made them walk back to the coop. I'll do again and again 'till they're done! Storky was roosting at bed time but we'll see. Jasmine I had to take off the nest and put on the roost.

Guess that's it... night all.

Good Morning Everyone! Bf4 what I want to know is who was rocking those eggs before they started doing it themselves?

Sf it looks like you've found a really neat place and you have great plans to make "yours". Think Will has a new friend, really nice lookin boy! Angie that's a cool idea with the note think you'll get your asking price. Careful with your client list. I over extended mine and usually came up short and had people PO'd at me for making them wait in line. Wish I had a foundation like Sf has that would make a nice sized coop! Cool on the new arrivals FT and CC! Amazing how fast those tail and wing feathers start coming in, at a week and a half some of the chicks tail feathers are already an inch long. They have no trouble flying out of a tall box

Brought Peatwo, Brownie, and Btwo in to see the chicks yesterday. Peatwo seems to think that their his progeny. I set him down outside and he crowed up a storm.

What else was I gonna say? It's gone.

DrHa... Are you psychic?! I was disappointed to look in the Bator this morning and not see a single pip. Then I bumped the table and sent a couple eggs rolling. And what should my wondrous eyes should appear... A PIP!!!!!

The baby even peeped hello to me!

It isn't my fault the window on the Bator popped open a bit so I could peep first either...
