just popping in before we lose power or worse. never broke zero today and we,'re at -16 @ 7 pm and dropping fast. wind chill warning is for -40 tonight and our actual high to.morrow is predicted to be -8, sigh.

Just came in from locking up...going to eat some soup and warm up! BBBRRR! I am thinking the East side Qdoba...11:45. Back after i warm up with some soup! TO

Oh now I am back with a belly full of soup! YUM!

Change of plans anyone having lunch with us...We are now heading to Chipotle on E Wash. Too many bad reviews about Q'doba for Celiacs. Sheesh...cant even have lunch with friends without checking out the menus now...

Chickens & buns all look good today despite the cold temps, although their egg-laying skills have become, shall we say, questionable? I don't think they are on strike, per se, but I'm thinking this deep freeze has made them a bit unwilling to, ummm, part the feathers any more than they absolutely have to?



The top egg is an average large size egg from my girls, almost all of which are 1+ years of age or older. The 2 little ones came out of the same girls today. WTH????? There are no POL/pullets in there, so how do you explain it?

Wow..I was really far behind in my reading tonight. Glad most of you are surviving this cold. I am worried about the broody on the nest. Pretty darn cold for setting a nest. If she decised to get off I do not blame her one bit. I make sure she has food and water a few times a day. Does not take long to freeze water in this weather. I put an additional bale of straw in the coop to give them something to snuggle into for the bird who decide not to roost. The ducks loved the extra hay and straw they got. The birds were in and out most of the day..mostly in. The door stays open..

Terri, I have put the chickens in a salt water bath for 24 hours, than tossed them in the freezor.

I have no idea what I would do with a dog that kiled my chickens any more. I used to show American Cocker Spaniels and I had a pup named *Sparkel*. She finished in 4 shows. I had a new batch of chicks in the brooder pen, I think 30 of them. For some reason she got in there and killed every chick. She never bothered them before, but, it took one time. She was not beaten, she was sold. I did not make that decision. He wanted to shoot her. He said a preditor can be a dog, and he shoots preditors. ugh

SO D@MN COLD!!!!!! Tough not as bad as some of you! Checked the penned turkeys with the "thermo gun" a few min ago. It's a balmy 6* in there! They seem to be fine. The heated water dish is doing good. However I checked the water in the main coop and it was froze again. Checked the base heater and it was cold. Took the oil heater and tried to make a little "room" for the heater and water. I dumped the ice out and put fresh water in, they all came to drink! Hated disturbing them at night but I was concerned when I saw frozen water when I locked up. Guess it was good I checked. Also found one of the girls locked in the feed room.... must have snuk in on me when I closed.

TO.... 2 to 3 days in the frig. is what I was told. Move a joint to check, if it moves easy it should be ready to freeze.

Well, of to make potato soup for tomorrow.
May be on a bit later, it not.... Night!
