Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

what an active bunch you all are,

I was watching a football game. slept on and off through the first half.
we are reclaiming the sun porch. put a TV out there and a nice couch.

I have my gardening stuff out there.

have to get rid of two LARGE cockatiel cages fo make more room.. Annie finally got rid of the last 9 birds and is not planning on getting any more..
she has 3 or 4 of these LARGE cages in case you know of anybody looking for one,, $$ cheap $$ ..

I picked up 9 eggs today. found one dead hen.
the heater is finally working , it was 45 F in there. the thermacube is doing it's job.
no frost bite on any of the birds.

I unserimoniously stuck the new scion into a pot with another one.

emptied the dirt out of a flat and remixed it with more vermiculite.

my seeds from Brent did not come in the mail today.. they should be here in Monday's mail.

Annie stopped at Menard's to get me a seedling flat with the tiny compartments. IDK which kind she got because she continued on to work from Menard's.

Hello Wisconsin Thread. I am from the Illinois thread, Chicago actually. @chickendreams24 told me someone might be looking for some bantams and I am trying to find homes for a couple of pairs if anyone is interested. My banties just kept going broody on me and I gladly let them hatch out some small clutches. (I am a sucker for broody mamas and chicks). But now, I need to get my #s down before spring, all the boys have begun crowing, so, no crow collars have been put on. Kind of tough living in the city and have 2 Orp roos and 8 bantam boys crowing. I have 2 pairs of Frizzle black mottled bantam cochins, pullets are frizzled and cockerels are smooth. I also have a frizzled mottled cockerel and a smooth solid bantam pullet pair. I also have silver laced bantam cochin hen, and a split SL/solid cockerel. Not the best pics but you can pm if your interested. Thanks This is an older pic but shows their coloring a bit better than the others. This is the boy in the pic above. Pic doesn't do him justice. Both smooth boys are so handsome, wish I could keep 1 but I already have their Sire Max and a son for backup. Max is a Frizzled boy I purchased from City Chicks. This is the pullet in the 1st pic now Frizzled and Smooth boys My silver laced broody mama. I don't have a pic of the split boy at the moment.
Man I just love your birds! The mottled girl and boys and the silver lace girl. Okay drop them off we'll sneak them in lol. ;) I didn't really think I would like the looks of the frizzle so much but that mottled pullet is beautiful!
LOL, you are funny. They are adorable, and I like the fact that I actually get smooth and frizzle, its like getting 2 different kinds of chicks from the same hen.
Lol I guess I'll take that as a compliment. I may have to hit you up later in the year for hatching eggs from your beautiful birds. Jim just wanted to say thank you for the help with rooting the apple scions. I've been doing research and reading and we are hoping to try it tomorrow. I really hope it takes and we can save some part of these trees. Bitter cold today. The nasty cold here last night gave me a pretty major asthma attack last night when we were out doing chores. Thank God for my nebulizer. I wasn't even able to talk at all. Scary but it's a part of asthma. Had a belated family Christmas today went well had a lot of fun with DH2B's niece. She's a wonderful little girl.

chickdream,
I decided that on my next round of scions, I will use just two nodes. One for the root and one for the leaves.
when it comes to putting them into separate pots, I can use shorter pots. I use the large deli containers .. maybe I can get by with the short ones.
then I can get by with less potting soil, also..
I also make the diagonal cut at the root end.
cut it on the opposite side of the bud node and about 1/4 inch below. just don't damage the node.
this allows me to push the scion right to the bottom of the pot.

Playoff Sunday Finally....GO PACK GO!

Way to go bl4...more effort than I would muster for a race in the cold. I simply race to the fridge for another tall cold one and figure its all about comfort and numb!

Are you guys just doing rooted cuttings and not grafting? Just make sure any you do are from cold hardy varieties that weren't grafted onto a different rootstock. Otherwise, all of your work will be for nothing.

Half time, Pack is ahead. 14 - 6
still need another goal for a more comfortable lead.

We are cutting scions, just short pieces of first year's growth of the branches. the elderberry bush I took mine from is as old as I can remember. so it must be hardy for this region.

I don't have any root stock to graft apple to.
I did it several years ago, and then accidentally broke the tree off while plowing snow.

the apple cuttings have a while to go before I know if they are going to root.

I have a couple of obstacle course races I need to get ready for; the first one is at the end of January in Lake Geneva.
