Happy New Year! Congrats on all the wins hurley and on the hatches. You guys didn't waste anytime in 2013 did you.

Do you have a light on the hens judge? I would give em a brake....they don't eat much.

bigz
Hi- no I don't. At this point there is no electricity out there at all...

Judge, I am finally on the computer with the pics of the kitchen! Here you go! (The rest of you will just have to suffer.

)

This is the 'before' shot. There was a cabinet in that upper right corner and another next to it, then the lower cabinets along the sink and then below the uppers. I have a 17x14 kitchen and that was it for cabinets! A lovely barn light for a kitchen light, and a drop ceiling..... we ended up taking out the wall in between the kitchen and dining room (the one you see ripped to the studs and lath)...... put in a beam or two.....

And.... AFTER! I have some clear stained glass windows in the cabinets above the breakfast bar, and the fridge is opposite the sink with a pantry cabinet next to it. We do have the crown molding up along the top of the cabinets now, and I have put in a backsplash that surrounds the window as well as along the counter and behind the stove.

Replaced the ugly barn light with a stained glass light over the sink and a nice ceiling fan in the middle of the kitchen. That's my faux tin ceiling BTW, can't afford the real deal so I picked up that paintable wallpaper, pasted it up really well and then painted it an antique silver.

I hardly remember when my kitchen did not look like this! It was a PITA to do, I had to live without a functional kitchen for a month, but I am sooooooooo happy with the results! It really opened up the house!

Ok, back to cleaning...... actually I think I better get my turkey brining.......

Night all!

Good evening! Just got back from my friends' house; watched the first half of the Rose bowl. Now Chores are done and I am relaxing...AAHHHHH!
Judge; those Ameraucanas are funny things. If they were going through a molt and had light where they were then they probably would have continued laying IF you also gave them supplemental light. It starts getting short at the end of September (I think) so by the time they were comfortable with your set up they probably were done for the year. They should be starting up any time. Mine that dont have extra light just started up last week--well 2 of the 5 anyhow! THe A's with light have continued to lay throughout the winter. I hope you and your fam had a good Christmas party today!
Better watch out kjg...in Milwaukee somewhere some one had a calf in the basement and they got arrested!
ep.gif
I wont tell if you dont though...we have been known to have a "few" critters in our basement too!
AWWW Vicki! I would have loved to see you carrying all you girls to their supper! I thought you were going to say that you left them in the greenhouse for the night. That 45* sounds mighty fine about now!
ODrH---I used to love bundling up the little ones and getting them outside to wear them out some! Nothing like a bit of fresh air hey? Cool that you are winning the contests! I stayed away this year...never did repair my bator bottoms after they were snacked on by the birds! I am not missing little birds in my house however!
Sorry about your continued back luck Kim! Maybe you need a few more days of the New Year to get into your rhythm? I hope so!

I agree with you about that horse. The color is certainly neat but I think it wouldnt last a winter here! Step on one frozen hillock of mud and it would have a broken leg! Very wasp-waisted too and no depth of chest therefore not too mush stamina....I could go on! Color sure isnt everything for sure! Nice SB that you posted...
Ang--I have had a few lately that have had some ice on their wattles--looks like some might have frozen a bit. They seem to recover OK though. Never had icicles though!
Sure wish I had the $$ for that set up Cass! Looks good and ready to go...so who's buying it?

I feel pretty darn tired all of a sudden. I had my neighbor come today and bring 10 roosters. I contributed 3 and the man took them all. THen we caught 5 ducks for him and his wife said she wanted more...caught another 3! SO I got rid of more birds! I would have liked to be able to sell 10 of MY roos but I really didnt have what he wanted. I did let him have the two red and one black from this July...they were Phoenix crosses and he really liked them. Very pretty roos. SO I am sold out for the season (FINALLY) The only think I have left of quail and the way they are dropping I wont have too many left for spring! Anyone know how long they live? I had two Bobs dead this morning and I thought they were indigenous to this area? So the winter shouldnt bother them right? My Cots are doing fine outside...might have to do some moving around. I am iin a conundrum about the meaties. They are not growing as fst as I thought they would because of the cold so they wont be ready to butcher next week...then I am gone for a weekend and I really doubt if DH will be able to handle feeding them fermented and also do all the rest of the chores. I sure wish DD20 could be here for the weekend! SHe is getting her wisdom teeth out though! A problem for sure...I am betting that I will have to come home from my weekend "away" to do the chores. SOmetimes animals are sure a pain in the *****!
OK--other stuff to read still...talk to you tomorrow! I need popcorn!

It's beautiful! Funny about the ceiling- half of my house has the same thing. We put it up and painted it to look old. My parents did the same in their bathroom with copper color paint. Thanks for sharing and giving me some ideas

Oh- I just noticed- we have the same faucet. Guess we have great taste

That 'new' kitchen was finished in 2005! It is still new to me, and I could never go back to what it once was..... I love to cook and cooking in the old one was a NIGHTMARE! No counterspace, no cupboards, cruddy layout, cruddy floors...... I did enjoy having that triple window, but there was no way to keep it and put in the cabinets I needed. I did not get a cabinet for cookie sheets, and I really needed one. I just could not fit one in the space I had. I did splurge for a cabinet that has roll-out shelves for the pots and pans. Cast iron stuff is stored below the oven. I was lacking drawers in the old set-up, so every cabinet I picked out for the lower cabinets has a drawer on the top, and I did get a 4 drawer cabinet (it is part of the breakfast bar). I did get an appliance garage as well, it is now in the corner by the sink and stove.

Well, almost ready for tomorrow..... a little more picking up, vacuuming, mopping, and I am going to call it good. Then I get to cook.

Terri, I hope you mom feels better really soon. That is horrible scary for sure.

Your aunt had a stent put in? I thought your mom was the one with chest pains?

Congrats on the hatching, Del! I agree with the Doc, get that lid back on there!
ep.gif

I also agree with Doc that yotes are bad news all around. I'm glad your dog has a fear of them, but I hope she can learn to relax when she's safe in her home. Those things are nothing to be messing around with. They will kill a dog in nothing flat.

Doc, I am so glad L is home & I hope her ails go away fast. I get sinus infections all the time & they just suck!

Hoping you both get some sound, uninterrupted sleep soon.

Just don't be callin' me baby New Year, Terri!

Casie, I envy your layers! I'm only getting 3-4 eggs from 17 layers.

Wow, Hurley, congrats on the hatching and aren't you a lucky duck!

Ah Vicky, you never cease to crack me up with your spoiled chookie stories.

Kristi, once they figure out the suet, watch out! They'll peck it outta your hands before you got it into the feeder.

My birds love it!

Gorgeous kitchen, Bl4!

Oh, it is way later than I hoped. Gotta still do stuff then get to bed. Gotta get up early. Sweet dreams, all!

Hi All!

TO... hope Mom and your Aunt are doing well.

Dr.H... Interesting they start in at 3:30.... the big ones here think that's a good time too
hmm.png
They were going 'tll after 6am playing with a plastic bag.... in my room! Give L some nice clove and honey tea... should help.
vicki.... Nothing hens like more than a well trained care giver!

ODR.H... little kids look so cute bundled up and playing in the snow!

GR... It's been years since I really LOOKED at horses, but I agree, the one you posted looks like a very sound and beautiful horse. The other, thou beautiful in it's own right, was way too delicate and just seemed "off". Hope you get your tax issues resolved quicker than we did... seems every couple of years we get a notice we owe from 6 to 8 years prior! Well, if we screwed up ..... let us know right away!!! I think they count on you forgetting things and loosing records!

IRS Irritating Rat **** (If you got a better one let me know!)

Bl4..... LOVE that kitchen!!! I couldn't have the Microwave up that high.... but nice!

Well, I'm later than I wanted to be tonight.... but I scrubbed up the stove and made egg salad which I didn't plan on doing either.

Night All!

Morning All!
TO I hope your mom and aunt are doing OK.
The only supplemental light my flock gets is from a rope light thingy that is solar powered, they were super cheap one year at Menards, I lost one box and just found it about a month ago, the other has been up for almost a year and a half, more of a long string of night light
but if I need to see I can.
Joan did put up plexiglass all along one wall of the barn where windows used to be, she would put up plywood every winter/spring, and it was dark as a cave. This winter 2 stalls have great light coming in and the 3rd gets light across the aisle and from front windows. But no heat.
I am lucky to get 4-5 eggs from 40 birds, now about 10 are retired and 8 are just older chicks, but 20+ are laying age!!! LOL

Time to go out and install the battery so I can take DH to work.
