Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Terry,

There is a gardening workshop in Jefferson on Saturday, and part of that is a potato fair. It is put on by Sustain Jefferson, and is going to be at the Jefferson Area Business Center, 218 Wisconsin Drive. http://www.sustainjefferson.org/garden_workshop.htm

"Running all day - The Potato Fair, an all-day celebration of the spud, will offer many varieties of organic seed potatoes for sale -- from stalwart storage spuds to delicate fingerlings -- all from the stock of the renowned Seed Savers Exchange of Decorah, Iowa. Spud lovers may attend the Potato Fair for free anytime during the day without registering for workshops. Gardeners can buy in quantities ranging from one seed potato to a pound or more. Expert growers will be on hand to talk about different potato varieties and answer spud-related questions."

I got potatoes there last year, and they were amazing!

Whooooo-Hoooo! This is definitely an "ask and you shall receive" moment!!!! I will be attending for sure! I guess if I would attend my MGV meetings I would hear about this stuff hey?

Oh David...I dont know if you can sex that particular breed at hatching or not but many you can feathersex...there are a few videos on youtube about it...every time I try I seem to second guess myself; but what you do is look at where the flight feathers are starting to come on the end of the wing. IF there are long AND short ones it is a female. If they are all the same length, then it is a male bird. This only works for certain breeds though. I watched a film one time where the factories were sexing chicks and those guys do many thousands per hour!-- tossing the boys into one chute and the girls into another! It was unbelievable! Good luck!

I just came down to sort some eggs and label them for incubating.. How come label and table are not spelled alike ??

I shall be busy for about an hour.. but I checked in here first..

Terri, I wonder if wing sexing works for turkeys ?? that would be nice .. I need to find a sure fire way.. I am going to set only 2 dozen turkey eggs .. BTW I will not vent sex them..

later,,,

Any Milwaukee area cheeseers have a coop. For 5 or 6 chickens.
My two wellies dont like my marans much would like to separate them and get 2 more marans maybe.

Hmmmm........... the chicken math is strong in this one................ and fast.

otonoh yes mother nature is really helping with my covered run removal too. LOL Now the plastic is ripped in shreds and covered in a fine sand. We really need rain here. Going outside and breathing at the same time can be hazardous, with all the sand flying through the air. The seeds I planted may have blown away.

I need to get a bigger brooder for my chicks today. And not even a plan started yet. I guess that will be my main project and then go from there.

Hopefully all of those dandy danelion seeds that you worked so hard at planting stayed put. Otherwise I hope they land in your Land Lords Garden !!! Or some rich bugger down the street that hires out for lawn care !!!

Terri, good one, I am not that much of a noob. I did ask if he could sex them, he doesn't know how. Does anyone know how to?
what to look for? looks like I need to do some research.

David

Here is a vid from You tube. Kinda blurry, but you get the idea pretty easily. I've found it is easiest to figure out when they are 3 days old. If they're any older, forget it. Good luck!

Evening all!
Spent the day playing door man for the dogs. They had quite the day playing In and Out! They barked at everything today.....leaves, wind, squirrels, birds, ground hogs, cows, cats...you name it....drove me nuts...

Ah man phone is ringing and it's in the kitchen......where I am not....Grrrr...wrong number....

Other then that I washed a ton of canning jars and lids. That was fun.
I got a great deal on some salt and flour and I wanted to keep them in something other then their original packaging so I can store them. I have to find my oxygen absorbers for the flour though.....

David-I'm having trouble on how to word this

..... Depending on the strain of SLW, yes they can be feather sexed. So not all SLW can be feather sexed. Does that make any sense at all?

I think it's worth a look see at the feathers. You never know the breeder might have a feather sexable strain.

Morning All!!
Not much going on here. Girls are good. Lots of drama as usual.
I have so many eggs I though Id' try my hand at making powered eggs. It looks very simple.
I also have to clean out the brooder. The meaties are such pigs....

Well, I best be off. The dogs want out...they saw a ground hog yesterday for the very first time and Fred is determined to "catch" it. Of course the fence is a big obstacle in that goal! LOL!!

I just read something about powdere eggs. I think it was in the literature I got from TSC. Care to share the info you have. Pretty Please !!!

It is fun to hear some of the questions that never before chicken owners have though. I got there to late, didn't win the cabinet incubator !!

I was on the phone with TO, and she said some one here was looking for some chicks in the madison area??
I will try one more page back but have already looked at the current page 1919 and 1918 and not seen who it was.

I have 2 golden comet pullet chicks about 7-8 days old, i got them from TSC cuz I had to buy 6 to get the few I wanted.
I would ask what I paid for them which was around 3 a piece. I am in Brooklyn but can meet.
PLS PM me or call me 608-228-5420.
I won't be back on today for a LONG time OR not till tomorrow, I have a friend who is having surgery even as I type this. I am his driver and may have to stay overnight to
manage his pain meds and icing his shoulder (surgical sight).
Carol

Post number 191161 was looking.
