    I need egg cartons!

Ok, how do I find a reasonable source for egg cartons? Wherever I look they are $.25 or more each, and that is totally unacceptable. I can only sell eggs for $3-4 a dozen, and there's no margin in there for .25 cartons. To sell through my local farmer's market (they will give me $3 a dozen and...

    Best breeds for Laying?

I've revamped the way I do things, but last summer we bought three pullets and two roos at the local auction. My neighbor said they were red sex links. After keeping them in a cage for a couple days, I let them out with no facilities whatsoever. They stuck around. One of the hens got lost...

What Special Treat or Yummy Did Your Flock Get Today?

Mine got a blossom-end-rotted watermelon, an over-ripe ear of corn, and their first ever layer mash pellets. This morning they got sub-par Armenian cucumbers.

    Keets question

Anybody who may have seen my posts before knows I have three adult guineas I bought about three weeks ago. They are penned up and are "imprinting." Three weeks down, five to go (!?). My question has to do with the little keets my boss just bought. He bought 16 of them from about age 3 weeks to...

    Finally!

NOTE: This is a chatty, gushy, braggy post. You won't learn anything new. If you don't want to read it that's ok! Today broke the doldrums of about a week and a half with no eggs. It appears that one of my pullets laid her first egg. We have about six mature hens that have not laid in a week...

Garden Vegatables, some they love some they dont

The softer it is the more they like it, but mine like peas and beans if they don't have to shell them! They love watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. but they prefer to have the watermelon or cucumbers broken up first. I give them all the old rotten stuff from the garden. They love it.

So disgusted with the hatchery for posting EE's as Ameraucanas, but we love our pullets and roos, who are all very consistent in form with beards and sideburns, single pea combs, and gray legs. They probably won't lay for at least another month or so. I'll try to post photos soon. I would like...

    whole oats

Can you feed whole oats to chickens or do they have to be ground? I already have some on hand and wanted to feed them oats instead of corn since it's so hot. I don't have a real good way of grinding it.

    No eggs???

Quote: Mine have water dishes in the run but there are multiple water sources outside it as well. I feed them a little bit of corn in the run morning and evening, as well as any table scraps I may have. Otherwise they free-range. I probably don't need to give them any in the evening, but it...

Do chickens stop laying in the heat?

Only my two sex-links are laying. My others are doing very poorly. You can see my separate related topic under the post "No eggs?" in this forum. Weather was a little cooler last couple days, and still my other hens have not started laying again. Other than the sex-links, which are on another...

    No eggs???

Now that's an insight. You may be right. I can quit giving it to them altogether, but then what do I use to get them into the run at night? Although they mostly go by themselves anyway. Is the layer mash based on corn or mainly something else like soybean meal? If I give them a little something...

    New to guineas

I like them so far. I'm looking forward to letting them out to roam. Won't be for a while though! Do you think the diet I described is sufficient? I also stick some grass in for them from time to time and vegetative table scraps.
