    Earliest crow?

No one will believe this but I have one EE Bantam roo that is now 6 weeks old. This is a hatch of two that I hatched out in my incubator. I have my brooder in the computer room. I was typing away when they were 10 days old and I heard this sound. Looked over and low and behold the little guy was...

Small shavings? Or the bigger kind?

Larger shavings - barely any dust, small chicks cannot eat them and seems like you don't see the poop as quickly. I have three brooders in my house and they works wonderfully!

    Who's practicing their crow?

I have two EE Bantam x d'Anver chicks that are two 1/2 weeks old. At 1 1/2 weeks the comb on the light blue one was starting to get red. Have one roo and one hen. This morning I was on the computer and the brooder is right next to it and the the darn little roo started to crow . I almost fell...

    Alfalfa

Yes - they will pick the leaves off and leave the stems. Chickens love alfalfa and it is so good for them, calcium, and other good vitamins and minerals. Good Luck!

Don't worry - they will all be fine together. Growing up together they usually have a great bond.

ATTACK-I witnessed a hawk flying away with my chick!

I am very protective of my flock and only let them out when I am home but in January I let them out to clean the coop - it is huge. I was out and hear a scream..it was a Cooper's Hawk trying to carry off my white d'Anver hen. I knew that she was wounded and decided that that hawk was not going...

Can we have too many breeds to start?

Have a wonderful time with your new flock - they are like a flower garden.....so many colors etc. FYI most of the time if the mixed babies grown up together they get along. But everyone has had different experiences with a mixed flock. So much fun to breed and raise your own. Good Luck!

Gravel vs sand in run- Coop completed on New Year's Day!

A base of 1" gravel and then river or lake sand on top is great for drainage and cleaning...gravel alone will cause bumblefoot,,not a good thing and makes for hard cleaning. Good Luck!

    He has scaly mites right?

Treat with pour on Ivermectin and that will take care of it. Treating all of your birds will take care of internal and external parasites. Check BYC for dosages...I treat large birds with 5 drops on the back of their neck (must be on skin). Any eggs layed will need to be disposed of for 2 weeks...

HELP what happened to her Bum (WARNING GRAPHIC PIC)

Healing nicely. I would check everyone of your hens. If you find one that does not have a bald spot or scab then she is probably the culprit and the one doing the pecking and will not stop. I give mine alfalfa hay once a day + BOSS and occasional treats plus the normal ration, oyster shell and...

hung a cabbage in the coop

On top of their regular rations I give mine alfalfa hay. When they are coop bound (which here can be weeks or months depending on the snow load) they get a huge pile daily. High in calcium and they love to pick through and get the leaves. I rake up any stalks once a week. I do the Purina flock...
