When I went out to feed and water my girls tonight I noticed one of them has a pale comb and waddle...I havent noticed anything else wrong with her...maybe not as energetic as the other hens but nothing really noticable. I checked her vent and everything looks fine there....she only laid 1 egg...
If you use silvadine cream Make sure that any woman in child bearing age does NOT touch it....if there is any possability of pregnancy just touching it to apply to the poor rooster could cause damage to the fetus. Make sure you use gloves when you apply it and clean up the gauzes and such!
I sometimes get eggs from my RIR that look like they have some purplish specks on them....Or even sometimes some white specks...I just figured it had to do with how much calcium she had.....I have 2 EE's but they both lay a lighter almost pinkish egg.
I am fairly new and have only had chickens since mid april but what we did to get them to sleep on the roost was the first few nights just after it got dark we went out there and put them on the roost...after 3 nights they started sleeping up there all on their own. As for signs that they are...
I usually get eggs from my RIR at 8am one day then the next around 10 then 12 then 2 then 4 then she takes a day off usually and then starts at 8ish again. I haven't figured out the schedule for my EE that just started laying yet and I have two that still arn't laying.
unless they are meat birds you leave the food all the time....with meat birds after they are a certain age you leave it 12 in 12 out (or atleast that is what I have read)
Also where you meaning all day or just for a short visit outside? I am fairly new at chicks but I don't see any reason not to take them out for a short field trip to the run if you are watching them for signs that they are to cold. Again I am new to this so I am just saying what I understand...
We had 2 rats years ago in a similar style cage to yours...Well one of them got the name houdini...he found a way to open the door get out run around the house and then put himself back in the cage without leaving a trace (well other then the fact we found him out a few times and then watched...
I put mine out at about 6-7 weeks with no heat lamp....they where really well feathered and we had some warm weather here (washington state) and they did just fine...we have had weather in upper 60's for high and mid 50's for low for a couple of day's and they are just fine at 8/9 weeks....
Aww that's so frustrating....Sometimes mine peck at my wedding ring...but more often they peck at my fingernails. Don't have polish on them... no nummy treats underneath...just long natural nails....Ouch!
How old are the chicks...My six week old chicks picked it up no problem but I have heard some people will put treats down it so they walk down it to get the treats....Mine some times pass it altogether and just fly up to the top of there's.
I have named my girls...but I have only 4 and they all look different...I named them off of there personality or something they have done...My BA is bella because she like to ring the bell in her brooder alot....Cleopatra is an EE and she has really pretty "eyeliner" that reminds me of her...
We have more slugs then any other bugs that will get into there food (I live in Washington state) I just went out and checked on them again and they where inside the coop eating and drinking so YAY
I let my chicks out of the coop and into the run for there first full day...well I am wondering if I need to move there food and water out or if they are smart enough to go into the coop to drink and eat?
Illegal.....Live just barely in town....horses acrossed the street and chickens up the hill (even more intown and right off of the long walking path) fortunatly my neighbors on one side are deffinatly ok with it and will take care of them when I go out of town for the weekend....other neighbor...
Possibly a stupid question but had the birds just been outside when you saw the bug...any chance it was just a normal outside bug that had hopped up on your chick.....I might do a better inspection to make sure the chicks really have bugs on them and it wasn't just a coincidence.....
I just checked on them and they did great there first night. They where up eating and drinking and were not doing the upset peep....I think this will work out for them just fine...they seem to be content!
