Try giving your chick vitamins in his water. Rickets is a cause of curled toes in older chicks, but if you give the vitamins soon enough the toes will straighten out. This can sometimes happen even if you are using commercial chick feed.

    Sex- linked Information

chick pickin you have an excellent understanding of how sexlinks work. However here is another combination that will work..A Rhodebar male could also be used in the place of the Legbar (either Cream or Crele) to cross with the silver female to produce the barred red sexlink pullet in this scenario.

    YO GEORGIANS! :)

Forgive me for barging in, I live in NC and read this thread now and then, but I just have to answer this. The bantams do lay little blue eggs. Araucanas and Ameraucanas are recognized by the APA and therefore purebred breeds. Araucanas are tailless and have tuffs on their cheeks. Ameraucanas...

Standard rule of breeding. The female should always be listed first in a cross! ...then no need to s

I think the important thing is to be clear in communications. Everyone will not know the standard of male first so somewhere in each post the poster should indicate how he/she is listing the breedings. Stating "males listed first" would take care of the confusion and encourage others to follow...

Standard rule of breeding. The female should always be listed first in a cross! ...then no need to s

I would say that in animal breeding the male is first because the male can produce many more offspring than the female. With animals if you can't control the breeding and know who the father is than you are not a breeder. Poultry breeding has traditionally been done with 1 rooster and a group of...

Standard rule of breeding. The female should always be listed first in a cross! ...then no need to s

Since I have spent my life as a college professor teaching biology and listing the male parent first for mammals. I did some research on google scholar and found that the male is listed first in scientific literature on poultry. However, the researchers do specify the order of the cross in each...

AYAM CEMANI - Pure Black chicken, inside and out!

As I said NJ were a landrace. Were is the past tense. In 1935 selective breeding was done to save the breed. They are now a standard heritage breed in Norway. They are now available in 3 colors with other unrecognized colors in Norway. This information is from...

AYAM CEMANI - Pure Black chicken, inside and out!

I don't want to hijack this thread as it is about ACs so I will be brief. NJs were a landrace in Norway and are a heritage breed not an engineered breed. NJs are friendly and mine run to me if I have treats though the EEs usually chase them away. They lay a medium to large egg, most often...

AYAM CEMANI - Pure Black chicken, inside and out!

You should try Norwegian Jaerhons. They are Gull type birds who though active and good fliers are gentle and can be kept with other gentle breeds. I have raised them for years with EEs and they are less aggressive than the EEs. I have with 2 roosters and 23 hens, EEs and NJs, in one pen and they...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

I have been communicating with Norwegian breeders and they have provided me with the official Norwegian Standard for the Norwegian Jaerhon. Bjorn Netland, the original importer of the Jaerhon is working to translate it. I am so excited! We should soon have a guide to properly select our breeding...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

I just got this from a Norwegian chicken Club and was very interested to see that the gray variety is now approved. NORWEGIAN Norwegian Jærhøne Country: Norway Very good egg layer Hardy, good flyer Comb: single comb Approved colors: brown yellow, yellow brown, gray Weight: Rooster: 1.75 to 2...

    Norwegian Jaerhon

If you cross the two types you should get both types after a couple years of inbreeding, but the results of the crosses might be difficult to predict. The homozygous dark would be eb/eb and the homozygous light would be e+/e+ so if you started with homozygous varieties then the F1 generation...

    Color genetics thread.

So the Production Blacks you are talking about are basically barred leghorns that are bred for egg production and not show. I thought they were a sex-link hybrid. They would produce auto-sexing chicks with Norwegian Jaerhons. What hatchery do they come from? If they are as nice as their picture...
