They want to make it ALL illegal. What do you think of Senate Bill 510

Quote: It's gotta be a form letter that someone wrote up and sent to every senator. I got the following: Dear Friend: Thank you for taking the time to contact me about S. 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act. I appreciate hearing from you about this issue. According to the Centers of...

Coop and Run in winter time

Don't feel bad, our coop has electric, running water (hooked up to an automatic watering system), and heat (45-50 degrees) (but mostly because we have a few new little ones in there, and to keep the water from freezing)…

    Hawk Under Deck

"The hawk was severely injured and it wouldn't have survived anyways. I just couldn't stand to see it suffer any longer, I swear officer!" I just wouldn't say it had been severely injured by the first shotgun blast…

Coop and Run in winter time

In some aspects, I think chickens are really really dumb. For example, ours will go outside and refuse to go back in their coop until sunset during a complete downpour. The absolutely love being out in the rain. However, last week we had a very small snow flurry, just enough to change the grass...

    Cheapest Flat Panel Heaters

Quote: I'll say! $112 for a 20 foot long heated hose? I hope they would send some vaseline with it… I would need at least 2 to reach the coop for the automatic waterer. however, for about $45 I can hard pipe the system with heated pipe cable… Wonder which way I'm gonna go? No offense, of...

I just "processed" my first rooster

Quote: Ooh thanks for the heads up! How do you heat the 55 gallon drum? Do you have pictures? I can get the drum for free from my DH's work. Right now, we have a pit dug and have the drum up on blocks above it, and heat it with wood burning in the pit. in the spring, I plan to change the...

I just "processed" my first rooster

We used a turkey fryer our first time processing, and will never do that again. It was barely big enough for the faverolles. We since switched to a 55 gallon drum. It is PLENTY big enough to process even our largest geese…

    Scalding pot

You could use a 30 gallon steel drum. I'm currently in the process of building a new scalding tank out of one. And they are pretty reasonable too, I think ours was about $14.

Questions about children's reactions to butchering chickens

We have 6 kids here, and do our own processing. the youngest 2 (3 and 18 months) don't have a clue as to what is going on. The other 4 (8, 7, and 4 year old twins) are usually out with us "trying" to "help". The oldest is the only one who seems to be bothered by it. She just goes off and plays...

Winterizing Nipple Waterers? UPDATE Really? No One Knows?

I just finished our nipple waterer system. If you want to call it finished. The system feeds from our house supply to the coop where we have a reservoir. From there it feeds to the PVC pipes that contain the waterer nipples. My problem is also how to keep everything from freezing. My initial...

    Silly question... ornery chickens

my wife calls it: "molesting the chickens"… most probably figured it out, but the "puff and fluff" is what the girls do after mating…

    Poultry nipples-Farmtek

anyone still have the instructions for the nipples? if so, could you post what pressure they recommend, low and high? we are planning to put in a piped system directly from our house supply, and I know I will need a pressure reducer. Our well pump is set to 75psi, and I'm SURE that is way too...

What's the name of your chicken coop? "Chicken" Hilton here

i call it the "taj-mahal" you can see it in the background of this picture: worst part, the wife is planning a future expansion, which luckily in my designing, we can build the new part, then split the coop in half and slip the new addition right in the middle… each "expansion" section adds 6...

    Cats

we have 5 outdoor cats, and they are the "protectors" of the girls... not that they need much protecting. the girls have killed frogs and snakes in the yard, and the cats and girls live in harmony and have their "understanding"… they just don't bother each other.

    egg eating!!!

We found ceramic eggs at the craft store for $1 each... they work great for teaching... unfortunatley if that doesn't stop it, your only solution is to send the ones with egg on their beaks to the arctic camp.
