Free to a good home: I have 2 hens, a Barred Rock and a Rhode Island Red that are the last of a small flock. The house is being sold and their current caretakers cannot take them. They are close to 4 years old, so probably need a good place to retire. The Barred is super friendly, the RIR is...
My chickens have become obsessed with pecking the paint off of the fence posts and side of the barn. I believe we used laytex paint but I can't believe this would be healthy for them and am not sure why the interest all of a sudden. I do my best to shoosh them away but there is a lot of fence...
Went out to the run a while ago to find blood everywhere and one of my barred rock with what looked like a torn/bitten comb. Then my other barred rock was constantly attacking her everytime she walked by or was near her. I am assuming the crazy barred caused the injury. So, do I need to worry...
My not quite 6 month old hen looks like she's molting? Most noticeble at the base of her tail, also some balding around her neck and breast areas. No blood, no mites that I can see. Is there anything else causing this and is it too soon for her to be moulting?
Lucy, my RIR laid her first egg today! Now I know why she was acting so anxious the past two days---She's much calmer now. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
My rhode island red has started going in and out of the coop constantly like she has OCD. She runs in it looks around, runs out pecks and runs in. I've watched her for quite a while and it seems constant regardless of whether i'm nearby or inside and regardless of where the other girls are at...
My chickens are 12 weeks old and hate everything except chicken food. They will eat tomatoes but hate everything else I give them. Is this just because they are young or are they finicky? I've tried zuchinni, oatmeal, cooked celery/carrots, summer squash, and apples--
My pullets (11 weeks) will try and dust bathe on the floor of their coop, so i made them a dust bath in a shallow pan with wood ashes and diamataceous earth -- they want nothing to do with it. They'll walk through it and around it but won't get in it. Any ideas how I can help them figure out...
Thanks to whoever posted adding water to the dust left after the chickens peck the crumbles to death. i added a little bit of water and mixed it around and they gobbled it right up! No more waste.
My pullets are a little over 8 weeks old now, I've read that I should switch them to a grower/finisher at 10 weeks of age but I have yet to find a grower/finisher feed. What should I be switching them to? Also, at what age do I not offer feed 24/7? Thanks,
We live in Ohio and are forecasted to get 35-65 MPH with rain from this storm. I'm trying to get my coop ready as my 4 pullets are only 8 weeks old and i'm a bit nervous about their safety. THe coop is tied down to metal stakes as is their run but 65 mph winds are nothing to sneeze at. Any...
I was just reading about impacted crops. At what age does this become a problem? My hens are almost 8 weeks old. I was giving them some baby grit but I haven't been doing so regularly. Should I be on a constant basis? They are in their coop and run now.
My 4 hens are now just 6 weeks old and tonight is their 3rd full night in their coop outside. Tonight and last night as I went out to close them in and do one final check, they were in some sort of hysterical mode. I don't know if that's what it is, but they sound as if someone is in some sort...
What is the best way to hold a chicken while inspecting for pests? My girls were all about being handled while in the brooder, but now they are outside in their coop / run, they want nothing to do with being held. They're just 6 weeks old now but guessing it isn't too soon to check for pests...
It has been a trying couple of weeks for me, not so much my girls, but last week at 5 1/2 weeks of age we had a sort of nice day for Nw Ohio so i let them play in their run with their coop door open. unfortunately, they decided that evening they were NOT coming out of the coop and were NOT...
I'm new to chickens and my girls are 5 weeks today and still in their brooder. I'm hoping to move them to their coop in a week or two. Do you need to put food and water inside their coop at night. I'm still not sure what to expect over the winter as far as what they will need inside and...
My chicks are 4 1/2 weeks old and have been very healthy. We are having a warm day today, so I took them out to their run for a little while-it was their first outing. I noticed 2 of them were sneezing on occasion-- Is this a beginning sign of an illness or something associated with their first...
the girls are 4 days old. today they are very loud despite the fact that they seem warm, are eating and playing. do they get bored? they are trying their hardest to "escape".
