Hello all! I'm a total new be to quaill, still doing research before I "dive in". Most the info I can find is for regular quail, but not much on jumbo coturnix quail. A few questions:
-whats the difference in space requirements? Including the cage's height....
- how much larger are the jumbo...
Ok, about 1 hr ago I processed my first 2 birds. What did I learn: be aware of the "splash zone" (the wife was not happy about a few blood drops on her fav tree swing, ooops)...and having the right n sharp tools will make the job much easier (duh)....
Now, I had a hard time removing the neck...
So I put 12 eggs under my 1st broody and 10 of them hatched today!! WOOOHOOO they are doing great and mama is doing a great job!
The Big girls are not even paying any attention to them, so that's good that they wont bother them...too much :)
They are a mix of a Dominique rooster over RIR...
So my olive egger, my youngest bird, was my 1st to go broody (she also laid the earliest)...today 1 put 3 Dominique roo RIR hen cross and 9 Dominique roo and silver laced wyndottes cross....wish me luck!!!!
Wonder what that mix is gonna look like....
Just wanted to share....I think is a big egg to be her 1st...well done Diana!!!
Next to a QTR:

So for the last few weeks I've been able to hang out with my dogs and my chickens in the back yard. I knew my Lab would be ok eventually, but I would never thought my Sheperd/Hound dog would ever be ok with them.....she is actually very good with them!!
Bella and the girls

Funny story....my Shepherd/hound mix decided to jump the shortest part of the backyard fence last night to go chase something at the next door backyard (they do not keep it very clean and there is always critters running around at night). They only way we realized she was gone is because my...
Here is my attempt to introduce the new girl. Drop some treats inside and out side the cage and let them "break bread" together.......
4 of the 5 girls meeting the new girl (New girl is an Olive egger, to be named later)
The 5th girl...Loca
What did you say to ME!!? lol
So I decided to make some additions to the coop/run today...I added 1 more water station, 1 more feed station and 2 perches. All to help the new addition "get away" from the big girls when needed and to make sure she can find feed and water no matter where she is. Also it gives more "room" for...
My wife snuck behind me and took a pic of me enjoying the girls free range time....I sit here every day after work......soo relaxing!!!!

The baby!!
Time to go in

This white ee is looking more and more roo'ish every day. She/he is about 13/14 weeks old...so what do you think?
was puffing up...all they do is fight lately lol
She came from the same bin and is about the same age (for comparison)
Last Sunday I got rid of the 3 cockerls, two of them bein the top 2 "dogs"...so now the 4 girls left (pullets), and a new pullet I added, are trying to figure out who's boss...but is getting old!!! lol How long does it take more less?
So the boys are gone (no more roos ) and a new girl joined the flock...today I finally let "the new flock" free ranged. They are cooped up most of the day in a 5'x10' run 5'x4' coop and what do they do? They go into the small cage, the one I had the new girl in (so they could meet each other!)...
So my 3 cockerels will be picked up within the hr, , and since the two older were 1 and 2 in the order I'm guessing a new pecking order "dance" will take place. About how long until the new pecking order is set? I have 1 hen I want to introduce to the 4 pullets left, but I think I should let the...
I have an 11 week old autralorp with well developed comb and waddles bigger than any of my other birds (he/she is the baby)> I wanted to post pics, but what do you know I left them @ home...I was wondering if any of you have any pics of your birds @ 11 weeks and left me know if they are girl or...
My white ee, 8weeks old, is the bottom of the pecking order and there is something wrong with her! 1st she is getting pecked by the flock! But is the way she peeps. She doesn't peep, peep, peep like the rest, she is quiet all the time except when she sundenly shakes her head and loudly...
