I was just reading this site and it was saying that with 100 pounds of table scraps you can get about 1 pound of larvae to feed your chickens per day.
Looks pretty interesting. I usually don't have many scraps though. I wonder if those little things would eat pine shavings...
Ok, I finally finished my little tunnel from the coop to the tractor. The first night I kinda had to push them up one by one...last night I put them all in there and they slowly walked up to the top and went in the coop. They come out in the morning when I open the door in the morning because I...
So, I have 4 chicks that grew into 3 hens and a rooster...they're about 4 months old and the rooster has made a few attempts at making noises but we've been waiting on him to wake us up one morning with a loud crow...
So Saturday morning I hear what sounded like an old dying dog howling...I...
Ok, I have 4 chickens and I usually wake up around 7 and take them from the coop to the run. Usually the later it is, they'll be waiting for me at the coop door. Today is Sunday and my DW went out to get them at 8 and they didn't want to come down from the roost. It's almost 9 and they're still...
One of my "Hens", Josey, ended up growing and growing and growing. He is now "Joe Z".
Our neighbors probably won't like him singing in the morning so we want him to go to a good home before he gets his singing voice.
He was hatched in June, so he's about three and a half months old.
Ok, so here's my current coop setup (though I've started adding a ramp from the run to the coop.
I have the roost going along the open side facing toward the house. Mainly so I can look in and see them and there's nothing there to climb to get any sort of access for predators.
My bedroom...

Gay-Ellen Stulp and Stephany Miskunas are lobbying the Lafayette City Council to allow them to keep pet chickens at their homes in the historic Highland Park neighborhood.
Stulp said she...
Ok, I was in Sam's yesterday and they had some expensive eggs that were being sold as "vegetarian" chicken eggs...from chickens who had never eaten meat.
Is there a point to that? Or is it just a way to make vegetarians think that eating those eggs is ok?
Also, I finally got my chickens to try...
Ok, I live on the coast and have easy access to oyster shells...is there a way to capitalize on them in a way to feed the chickens? How would I grind them up? Or would they just peck away at them on their own?
Ok, so my coop has a slanted roof and I have some leftover shingles from my roof so last night I nailed them onto a piece of plywood and got it ready to go. My wife says that I screwed up because I didn't put plastic down first...
Is my roof going to warp and be screwed up because I didn't put...
Ok, my 4 chicks are at about 6 weeks old. The farmer I bought them from was fairly certain that they were all females but couldn't guarantee it.
So this morning I took them from the brooder to the run to enjoy the day and the two biggest chicks started "fighting". They were standing up as high...
Ok, so I mentioned my chickens to my boss and he had a story for me about his sister's chickens....
He said that his sister had a chicken and the chicken wouldn't lay any eggs...so she was telling her mother and her mother told her that she needed a rooster. So her sister got a rooster and that...
My chicks are about 5 weeks old so I sometimes put them out in the run during the day on the weekends to play (while periodically checking on them since I haven't secured the run for digging yet).
Yesterday they were out most of the day and I saw two young raccons at the edge of my fence...
We have black snakes all over the place here. I went out this weekend to the run and found a dead black snake stuck in the hardware cloth. It appears that it went from inside the run to the outside weaving its way upward only to get stuck about half way down his body, where he died.
Fortunately...
Ok, I'll be building a 4X4 off the ground coop, just wondering what height it should be.
I plan on putting up 4 fence posts 4 feet apart, putting a floor with a wooden 'box' for the shavings on the bottom. Then on three sides an open hardware cloth door and one side will be solid with the door...
Ok, when we went to get our chicks my DW fell in love with this baby goat that was at the farm. Now she's talking about getting a pet goat.
We're definitely not on a farm, but we have a decent sized yard that the dogs run around in. She's pretty much wanting a goat to be like one of the dogs...
We got our chicks this weekend, they're about 3 weeks old. Hopefully a few are hens

So, I went to get my chicks this weekend. A high school 4Her was the one selling the chicks and was very proud of his farm, he gave us a great tour and showed us all of his animals that he works very hard every day to take care of by himself.
He had straight run chicks, which we wanted to end...
Can I see some pics of how people have their chicken tractor tires set up?
I thought I had it all set, I had four 'L' shaped steel pieces that I was connecting to two solid pieces of wood with the lawn mower tires attached, but on my first attempt they didn't fare very well. I still need to try...
