I use poultry cups to water my flock. I have some birds that have a bad habit of pecking each other. I'd like to put some peepers on them but am worried they won't be able to see the small cup when they look down to drink.
Last summer I put some peepers on one of my chickens for about a day. I...
I have chickens that won't leave each other alone and continue to pull out the feathers of each other on their butts. I live in a cold climate and 2 of the 3 have nearly naked rear-ends because of this habit, plus bloody spots where their feathers get pulled out.
I suspect they are bored and...
I posted several weeks ago about the major bullying problem that I have amongst my hens.
Last night my husband and I put on peepers on the hens that we caught bullying. The minute we put them down, after trying to get it off, they continued harassing the other hens. The peepers didn't seem to...
A couple months ago, we noticed that one of the chickens in our flock was never leaving the coop to go outside in the run and had feathers plucked out. Upon further experimentation and testing we realized that she was being bullied. Every time she went out into the run the other chickens...
Hello! My husband and I are in the process of building our new coop. I love the look of the tilt-out awning windows. However, when I check the price of those at Lowes or Home Depot, they are expensive! Does anyone know where to purchase these kind of windows for a better price are do you...
I have 4 chickens and they have been laying for about a year now. About a month ago, we found an egg in our backyard behind some bushes. Today, I went out to gather eggs and decided to check behind the same bush just to see. Sure enough there were three more eggs in the same spot. We let out...
I have 4 hens and I quite enjoy them roaming my yard, but they are destroying it. Mulch is strewn everywhere. They scratch and dig right at the base of my plants. They are eating all of the new growth that is coming in. I'm worried that they are going to kill the tender plants before they...
Hey Yall! Not sure where to put this question, so here goes!
About 10 days ago, I tracked down some fertilized eggs and put them underneath my Buff Orpington who is broody. Tonight we candled(sp?) them and we saw nothing in the eggs at all. So the supposed fertilized eggs were not. :(
I...
I have a Buff Orpington that is hanging out in the nest box waiting for her non-existent eggs to hatch. I am considering getting some local fertilized eggs to put underneath her. From your experience will this work giving her someone else's eggs? Will she stay on the eggs long enough?
Just...
Hi! Do you know of any article/studies that have been done that show that backyard chickens/eggs are "safer" to eat than store bought? Particularly in regard to salmonella poisoning? I have a sister-in-law who is is a germ freak and she was trying to tell me today that she has read online that...
Andi, our dog spends her day either trying to herd or play with our 4 chickens. Up until this point they have completely ignored her other than giving her an occasional peck on the nose. Finally, our black sex link is paying her some attention. I uploaded a video of them together on Youtube...
Hi I have a black sex link (we think) a Buff Orpington, Wyndotte, and an easter egger. They started laying the last week of November. All of their eggs have been size small. The easter egger is laying mini size. Just wondering if the eggs will get larger the longer they lay?
Thanks!
Hello! I have 4 hens who are all about 17 weeks old. On Thanksgiving Day we found our first egg! A very small blue/gray egg. The following day we found our first large brown egg. I thought I knew who they were coming from, but now I am confused.
I assumed our Americauana was laying the...
I am planning on using a water tower to feed my chickens. (Poultry nipple attached to the bottom of a pvc pipe, suspended from the ceiling.) Just wanted to ask those who use one. How do you keep it from freezing in the winter?
Thanks!
I have been planning on putting down some linoleum flooring in my coop to help with cleaning. The other day I was reading on a website that discouraged using linoleum on the coop floor, because urine and moisture will be able to seep under and rot the wood. Has anyone had this problem?
Thanks!
Hello! I just found a great buy on a used chicken coop. The previous owners did not put in enough ventilation so I am planning on cutting a hole in the side and putting in a window. I have seen windows in the coops section that hinge on the top and are held open by a stick etc. Do you buy...
I put some sand in the bottom of my brooder with my 2 week old chicks. It has helped a lot in keeping the smell away, but I have no idea how to get the poop out of the sand. Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks,
Tiera
I got my 4 chicks yesterday. When I woke up this morning to check on them, this is what their home looked like. Any ideas on how to keep them from dumping out all of their feed? I put their food/water on a piece of wood to raise it, but that didn't seem to help. Any ideas?
I am getting my baby chicks on Tuesday. They will be a week old. I have set up a brooder and we are going to keep it in our garage. Here are my two questions
1) The garage stays between 80 - 85 degrees. Do the chicks still need some extra heat or is that warm enough?
2) Is it o.k. to put...
